Colored quartz crystals are common gems. Amethyst is a semiprecious gem containing a trace of Fe3+. Citrine is less common and also contains Fe3+. Amethyst can be converted to citrine by heating at 550°C. This supplements the limited supply of citrine using low-quality amethyst. Rose quartz, pink to deep rose-red, contains traces of Ti and sometimes contains tiny crystals of rutile. [Pg.237]

Crystals have fascinating properties. A clear, colorless quartz crystal is pure silicon dioxide (Si02). But a crystal that is colorless in its pure form may exist as a variety of colored gemstones when tiny amounts of transition element compounds, usually oxides, are present. Amethyst (purple), citrine (yellow-brown), and rose quartz (pink) are quartz crystals with transition element impurities scattered throughout. Blue sapphires are composed of aluminum oxide (AI2O3) with the impurities iron(II) oxide (FeO) and titanium(IV) oxide (Ti02). If trace amounts of chromium(III) oxide (Cr203) are... [Pg.234]

Stn. Silica.—This acid is found pure in rock crystal, or in white quartz. Along vrith small and variable quantities of certain metallic oxides it forms many well-known minerals—as yellow or smoke rock crystal with oxide of iron agate, jasper, heliotrope, camelian, with the same metal amethyst with oxide of manganese prase with oxide of nickel rose-quartz with some fugitive colouring matter opal and calcedony with water, c. c. Many sands and sandstones are nearly pure silica, and quartz rock and flint are quite pure. [Pg.126]

The two forms on the left are formed by beta quartz, but are also formed, although not commonly, by alpha quartz. Quartz forms a large number of colored varieties, including rose quartz, amethyst, smoky quartz, citrine (Ught-yellow), and milky quartz. Inclusions such as rutile and hematite are fairly common. It also exists in a large number of varieties that exhibit no macroscopic crystalline structure. These include chalcedony, agate, flint, chert, and jasper. [Pg.174]

Quartz is a major component of granite and many sandstones. Colorless forms of quartz are known as rhinestones, and purple forms are amethyst. The pink variety is often called rose quartz. [Pg.440]
