SIGMA method

With previous methods, peak skew could not be determined with sufficient precision to be meaningful (3). However, with the tau/sigma method, peak skew is easily calculated to give precise, useful, quantitative information on peak shape. The tau/sigma method for calculating peak skew is preferred over other methods since this approach has a sound theoretical basis and values can be measured with greater precision and accuracy. 

Although Six Sigma had its beginnings as a quality performance standard, some safety professionals have sensed its value and promoted its adoption. As an example of the relevant articles that appeared in the safety literature on Six Sigma, I cite a paper by Tom Rancour and Mike McCracken titled Applying Six Sigma Methods for Breakthrough Safety Performance. This is how the article commences.

A further procedure using five standard deviations (the five sigma method, can also be used as a measure of column efficiency. This measures the width of the peak at 4.4% of peak height (1V4 4) and has the advantage of giving a better indication of undesirable tailing effects (see Figure 1.1). The plate number is calculated from eqn (1.5), but the measured efficiencies will inevitably be lower then the 4 values usually encountered.

Implementation of CE methodology can have several different ways and focuses. There are enterprises that have achieved a push forward in PD by introducing advanced project management. Others can see an important contribution by applying six sigma methods. The selected seven CE criteria represent a balance between different CE methods and are in the core of each application of CE to PDP. Attention should be put to the maturity level and contents of each criterion. Project management is comprised in the organization block use of methods is part of team formation and team members competences. 

Similarly, operational improvement tools are significant in reducing operational risk 5S, kaizen, Total Productive Maintenance, or the six-sigma method. 

Black belts They are experts in Six Sigma methods and tools. Tools include statistical analysis. Black belts are project leaders for Six Sigma initiatives, they also train other staff members in Six Sigma techniques. 

Combined Quantum and Molecular Mechanical Simulations. A recentiy developed technique is one wherein a molecular dynamics simulation includes the treatment of some part of the system with a quantum mechanical technique. This approach, QM/MM, is similar to the coupled quantum and molecular mechanical methods introduced by Warshel and Karplus (45) and at the heart of the MMI, MMP2, and MM3 programs by AUinger (60). These latter programs use quantum mechanical methods to treat the TT-systems of the stmctures in question separately from the sigma framework. 

Materials. I-EGF was either made by iodinating mouse EGF (Biomedical Technologies Inc.) by the chloramine T method, to a specific activity of approximately 1-2 Ci/ xmol, using Na- I (Amersham) or purchased from New England Nuclear. Phorbol diterpene esters were purchased from Sigma. Palytoxin was isolated from Palythoa tuberculosa as previously described (1).

Chromatorapf c methods For gel filtration of polysaccharide fraction PI, a Sephacryl S-300 chromatographyc column (1,1 X 46,7 cm) was calibrated with standard dextrans (molecular mass range 266, 72, 40, and 17 KDa Sigma Chemicals), and the void volume determined with blue dextran. Polysaccharide sample (0.5 mL 2 mg/mL) was applied and eluted with 50 mM NaOH, fractions 1 mL being collected and carbohydrate absorbance (phenol-H2S04) being monitored. 

Normal Rabbits. Six male, white rabbits (2.5 - 3.0 kg) were housed individually. Animals were fasted overnight for 16 hours (with access to water) prior to each experiment to reduce the gastrointestinal content and absorption variability. After treatment with either a control dose or experimental insulin in poly(acrylic acid) resin dose, a one week washout period was required before the next experiment. The protocol called for blood samples to be taken from an indwelling ear catheter at -1, -.5, -.25, +.5, +1, +1.5, +2, +3, +4, +5 and +6 hours. Serum glucose levels were determined by an oxidase colorimetric method using the Sigma 510 Glucose Kit.

DFTB has been combined with various force field programs, including CHARMM [49], Amber [50, 51], SIGMA [52], TINKER [34] and GROMACS (to be published).
