Ships intact

Spent Fuel Treatment. Spent fuel assembhes from nuclear power reactors are highly radioactive because they contain fission products. Relatively few options are available for the treatment of spent fuel. The tubes and the fuel matrix provide considerable containment against attack and release of nucHdes. To minimi2e the volume of spent fuel that must be shipped or disposed of, consoHdation of rods in assembhes into compact bundles of fuel rods has been successfully tested. Alternatively, intact assembhes can be encased in metal containers. 

Penetration of rust through an otherwise intact paint film is usually a result of inadequate surface preparation before painting, especially over weathered and hand-cleaned steel. However, superficial rust staining may be traceable to dissolved iron salts, e.g. in bilge water from a ship s deck. 

Many examples of bonded wood constructions have been known from ancient times for their usefulness in the building of boats and ships. However, the important technology of combining small pieces of wood to form large timber sections, with the strength and durability of intact lumber, is certainly a more recent product of the last forty years. The early stages of this modem development have been reviewed by Selbo and Knauss (1). 

Stray-current Corrosion. Stray currents in the past have resulted from DC-powered trolled systems, which have become obsolete. An electric welding machine on board a ship with a grounded DC line located on shore will cause accelerated attack of the ship s hull as the stray currents generated at the welding electrodes pass out of the ship s hull through the water back to the shore. Houses in close proximity can dramatically corrode at the waterline. The pipes in one house can be completely corroded, while those in the neighboring house may be intact. 

Early excavations succeeded in raising only the contents of shipwrecks or portions of the ships. Recent excavations have focused on raising the entire ship, with its contents intact. 

Dehydration techniques and methods involving in situ polymerisation are not considered suitable for anything other than small wooden artefacts. Freeze drying offers the conservator a safe method of drying small PEG-treated objects while air drying is more suited to the drying of larger structures, such as intact ships if the condition allows it. 

Figure 1.36 illustrates a curious case, when WPC rails, quite resistant to mold, were wrapped into corrugated carboard for shipping. Being stored in a wet and warm place, the cardboard was heavily infested and almost completely destroyed by mold. Otherwise intacted composite handrails were soiled with metabolic products of the mold. 

After the clinical study supplies have been sent to the study site, the monitor must verify as soon as possible that the supplies have arrived satisfactorily. Supplies may not be dispensed to study subjects until the monitor has checked their condition. The monitor will verify that the amount shipped matches the amount acknowledged as received. If there is a lack of reconciliation, or if the shipment is not intact, recruitment may be delayed until the situation is resolved. 

To ensure that a ship operates through its design life, it is necessary that the operator does everything possible to keep the coatings intact and inspect the coatings periodically to enable making timely repairs while the damage is minimal. 

This section covers the production, imports, and exports of rapeseed, rapeseed oil, and rapeseed meal by country. As is implied in Tables VII to XI, rapeseed can be transported as the intact seed for processing at the destination, or it can be processed at the place of origin and shipped as oil or meal. In the discussion to follow, the major rapeseed producing countries are discussed separately. 

The sample must be of sufficient quantity so that the detection limit of the method can be obtained. The sample must be collected in a timely fashion and preserved so that the analytes of interest remain intact until the sample can be transported and analyzed at the laboratory. Mobile laboratories placed on the sampling site or portable field chromatographs have been used to overcome the delay in shipping samples to the laboratory. However, most samples can be shipped overnight to laboratories in the continental US using commercial air carriers.
