Shiny scale

Most species of mirmow have a laterally crxnpressed body, a terminal mouth, and relatively large, shiny scales. Mirmows also have pharyngeal teeth in their throat, which are used to grind their food against a hard pad at the base of the skull. Male mirmows are often smaller than females, and many species develop beauti-ftil colors during the spawnir season. 

For two centuries, from the attribution of the name lepidolite and, more generally, from the time of the first analytical data, the micas have been subjected to continuous investigation and interpretation by many scientists. From simple observation, mixed with wonder, of the small shiny scales, one progressed to precise chemical and structural determinations. In turn these have formed the basis of genetic interpretations of these minerals and of the rocks of which they are fundamental constituents. Two centuries of... 

If thick steel (which stays in the furnace for a long time) is heated in a hot furnace, the scale becomes mushy, if not liquid. Semimolten scale has caused many erroneous temperature measurements in steel heating furnaces. Scale is an insulator. Its conductance is lower in its solid form, but the high reflectivity of the molten form causes it to act as an insulator. If the scale is not shiny or glossy, optical pyrometers and radiation pyrometers measure scale temperature, but not steel temperature pyrometers indicate a temperature somewhere between furnace ceiling temperature and scale temperature, but not steel temperature. Shiny scale (semimolten) reflects radiation nearly eliminating heat transfer to the load. 

Scraped-Surface Crystallizer For relatively small-scale apph-cations a number of ciystallizer designs employing direct neat exchange between the shiny and a jacket or double wall containing a cooling medium have been developed. The heat-transfer surface is scraped or agitated in such a way that the deposits cannot build up. 

When a flocculated feed is added to a filter tank, there is a definite time lag before this material reaches the surface of the filter medium. Since this lag time is not known at the time of testing, a lag time of 8 to 10 minutes should be allowed before starting the first leaf test on a flocculated shiny. Two, or perhaps three, tests can be run before the elapsed time exceeds the probable retention time in the full-scale filter tank. With knowledge of the elapsed time after flocculation and data relating to the rate of degradation, the rates obtained on the leaf test runs can be adjusted to some constant lag time consistent with the anticipated full-sc e design. 

Leaf Tests A bomb filter is used for small-scale leaf tests to simulate the performance of pressure-leaf (leaf-in-shell) filters. The equipment used is a small [50.8- by 50.8-mm (2- by 2-in)] leaf, covered with appropriate filter medium, suspended in a cell large enough to contain sufficient shiny to form the desired cake (Fig. 18-108). The shiny may be agitated gently, for example, by an air sparger. 

Conditioners are compounds added to keep the hair cuticle smooth and slippery. Silicone oils such as dimethicone and cyclomethicone are used to make the hair shiny and slippery. Humectants (moisturizers) like panthenol help keep the cuticle moist so that the scales do not stand up. Long-chain fatty alcohols such as cetyl alcohol, oleyl alcohol, and stearyl alcohol... 

Rare, shiny, and lightest metal of the platinum group. Hardens platinum and palladium. The presence of 0.1 % of ruthenium in titanium improves its resistance to corrosion 100-fold. The spectacular catalytic properties of ruthenium are used on industrial scales (hydrogenations, sometimes enan-tioselective, and metathesis). Titanium electrodes coated with ruthenium oxide are applied in chlorine-alkaline electrolysis. Suitable for corrosion-resistant contacts and surgical instruments. 

Gold offers yet another example of a case where a small-scale material has properties not shared by its bulkier form. Gold is an inert metal (though a shiny and valuable one), but it makes quite a boisterous... 

Oil clarity diminishes as the oil is used. KFC introduced a visual tester that they called the visibility tester. It is a stainless steel rod attached to a shiny silver disk at the end. The rod has a linear scale showing three indented marks, which are used to judge shortening quality. The shiny disk is lowered into the oil with the depth of... 

Thin, shiny, or scaling skin Decubitus ulcers... 

Black shiny rhombohedra or octahedra. dj 2.508-2.512. mp 235tT (no decompn) hp > 350CT. Its hardness is less than that of industrial diamonds, but higher than the hardness of silicon carbide ea 5,000 kg/mm2, on Mohs hardness scale = 9.3. Less brittle than most ceramics. Remarkably resistant to chemical action. Not attacked by hot HF, HNOj or HCr04. Decomposed by molten alkalis at red heat. Does not burn in oxygen flame. 

Some areas in the pipe showed the presence of both green deposits and shiny copper (Fig. 5.53). Pits were present in areas where copper is surrounded by green deposits (Fig. 5.54). The green deposits indicate significant corrosion. The black scale was carefully removed to identify the morphology of the pits (Fig. 5.55). The pits were located at the bottom of a hole. The morphology of the pits appeared to be characteristic of microbiologically influenced corrosion (Fig. 5.56). 

The Fehling and Tollens tests are not commonly used in large-scale syntheses. However, the Tollens reaction is employed industrially to produce shiny silver mirrors on glass surfaces, such as the insides of Thermos bottles. 

If the scale consists of shiny white crystals, a qualitative test for CaSO should probably be run first). 

The corrosion of mild steel as a consequence of the growth of snlfate reducing bacterial populations is characterized by the formation of iron sulfide scale, which can be fairly easily detached to reveal shiny, almost hemispherical continent pits.
