The observation that in the case of air flow over viscous liquids (p > 15cp) the K-H instability occurs at a lower gas velocity than the Jeffreys instability (Hanratty [53], Andritsos et al. [113]) seems to evolve from the neglect of the increase of the sheltering coefficient with increased liquid viscosity as shown in Figure 21. Figure 16 implies that the K-H mechanism and the Jeffreys-Miles-Benjamin sheltering mechanism both share important roles in the evolution of waves over viscous liquid layers.

Ram s Head Inn on Shelter Island, in Gardiners Bay at the Eastern end of Long Island, was the venue for a conference that was considered epoch-making for the emerging field of quantum chemistry by the participants. The National Academy of Sciences sponsored the Conference on Quantum-Mechanical Methods in Valence Theory with financial support of the Office of Naval Research. 

Provincial Papers Inc. is located on Lake Superior at Thunder Bay, Ontario. Sulphite/mechanical processes are used in the production of coated and uncoated fine papers from purchased kraft pulp and groundwood from softwood sources. Secondary treatment is carried out in an aerated lagoon system (a serpentine basin) and was installed at the mill in late 1995 (see Fig. 2). Effluent flow rates ranged from 25,000 to 35,000 m3/day in the two years following installation of secondary treatment. Treated effluent is discharged into the inner basin of Lakehead Harbour, a sheltered embayment created by a series of breakwaters. The Current River is the other major discharge to the immediate area of the mill outfall. A description of the EEM study is found in ESG (2000). 

In 1951 an international conference was held at Shelter Island near Long Island in New York, N.Y. Most of the leading figures in quantum chemistry were present. Two persons there symbolized the phasing out of desktop mechanical calculators (Prof. Kotani from Japan) and the phasing in of electronic digital computers (Prof. Roothaan of the United Sates). That was the first major conference with a focus on the emerging computer in theoretical chemistry [1],... 

However, as the correspondence from the firm of Beminghaus proves, the Central Construction Office of Auschwitz would have been able at any time to obtain solid, gas-tight steel doors, such as were manufactured by the umpteen thousands for Germany s air raid shelters. The fact that this was not done can only be because they simply were not really needed in Auschwitz. For delousing facilities, where the aim is not to keep great numbers of people mechanically completely isolated from poison gas (as in air raid shelters) or locked into a concentration of poison gas (as in the alleged execution gas chambers), wooden doors with makeshift gaskets will do. 

There were exacerbations of and deterioration of stability in psychiatric illness. Some of this was due to lack of access to proper medications, but again the stress of living in the shelter environment took its toll on individual coping mechanisms. We were fortunate in this shelter to have a top-notch team of Red Cross mental health workers and huge support of the local psychiatric community. We were getting daily visits by more than one psychiatrist during the time 1 was there. 

Outdoor mechanical work in rainy and/or extremely cold weather could be a safety hazard and should be restricted unless temporary sheltering is provided. 

Olfactory systems help to track down matters of concern, such as food sources, shelters, oviposition sites or social interaction partners. How does this work in a fly (For classical accounts see Rodrigues and Siddiqi 1978 and Rodrigues 1980.) Are the mechanisms similar to those in mice or in humans Indeed, there are surprising parallels between these phylogenetically distant kinds of animal (Ache and Young 2005 Hildebrand and Shepherd 1997 Strausfeld and Hildebrand 1999). These similarities do not necessarily postulate a common origin of olfactory systems, however rather, to the extent that these systems are not of common origin, similarities and discrepancies between them point to common versus specific functional demands of olfactory systems in different animals. 

Raupach and Thom [522] explained this fact by shading some EPR elements by another ones ( shelter effect ). However, the mechanism of this effect has not been clarified is it a result of the vorticity behind obstacles, or of the extreme turbulence level, or of the basic difference between the natural forest canopy and laboratory models A possible consequence of aeroelasticity of canopy elements was also listed, [522], All these mean that the purposeful experiments should still be carried out as well as the mathematical models should be developed that account for a particular behavior of EPR elements (like the freedom of droplets to be drifted by the flow). 

It is emphasized that the foregoing discussion applies to skyward, (i.e., well-rinsed) surfaces, and not to those which are primarily the sites of evaporation of liquid from adjacent areas nor to those more completely sheltered from incoming liquid water. At surface areas where substantial amounts of reaction products are retained in the stone surface, mechanical mechanisms of damage are thought to apply (3 ). Effects on sheltered, partially sheltered, and vertical surface areas are subjects of planned future work. Studies of the possible synergism of nitrogen dioxide effects with those of sulfur dioxide dry deposition also are being planned. 

In large group shelters, where mechanical ventilating systems will normally be required as part of the design, the inclusion of BW and CW filters is much more practical and less costly per person sheltered. 

Antioxidant defences can be divided into five categories avoidance (sheltering), antioxidant enzymes (prevention), free-radical scavengers (containment), repair mechanisms (first aid) and stress responses (entrenchment). Some organisms, particularly those that hide from oxygen, rely on just one or two of these mechanisms, while others, including ourselves, draw on the entire armoury. On a global scale, there will exist societies that can har dly sustain the minimum lequue-ments for food, water, clothing, shelter, and medicine, while affluent individuals and societal groups will co-exist. Unprecedented mechanisms need to be developed to cope with these developments and their consequences, intra-societally as well as inter-societally (i.e. between nations or groups of nations). 

Open-air exposure involves direct exposure to all atmospheric conditions and contaminants. Sheltered exposure is exposure with protection from atmospheric precipitation and solar radiation either under a cover or in a partly closed space such as shutter sheds. The total period and the season of exposure depend on the type of test specimen and the purpose of the test. The evaluation is carried out by visual examination, metallographic examination and estimation of mass loss, change in mechanical properties or performance characteristics of the test specimens [84].
