Coping mechanisms

Anxiety is a normal part of mental life and plays a crucial role in human psychological development and other forms of learning. Although systematic studies are lacking, suppression of normal levels of anxiety could impair the development of adaptive coping mechanisms. On the other hand, disabling anxiety impairs adaptation as well and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. [Pg.137]

One of the things I ve learned is to have fun, and I ve learned to have a better sense of humor. I ve always had a sense of humor but I didn t show it off. The first time I said something that made people laugh, it was like Valium. I got on a roll and just kept going. I often laugh and make fun of the things I do or my illness. I use it as a coping mechanism, and it helps other people to be able to talk and relax. Humor is a big part of me now. [Pg.123]

The authors describe a control experiment in which CTOss-benzoin product 245 was subjected to standard reaction conditions with achiral triazolium pre-catalyst 191 yielding retro-benzoin products, as well as cyclopentene product 247 Eq. 24. This result additionally demonstrates the reversibility of the benzoin reaction. When trimethylsilyl-protected 245 is treated under the same reaction conditions with ethanol as a nucleophile, ketoester 248 is formed along with retro silyl-benzoin and Stetter products. This result provides enough evidence that the cross-benzoin/oxy-Cope mechanism cannot be dismissed. [Pg.122]

Thermal addition of hydroxylamines to non-activated C=C bonds has been observed only during cyclization processes The reaction proceeds through a thermal retro-Cope mechanism as evidenced by its suprafacial stereospecihcity (equation 37). ... [Pg.130]

Psychologists have long had an intuitive awareness of the need for long-term interests to forestall the temporary dominance of competing short-term interests, and have discussed the means by which they do so under the name of defence mechanisms or coping mechanisms. As described by the literature of ego psychology, behaviour therapy and self-help, these mechanisms follow one or more of four distinct strategies (Ainslie 1982). [Pg.144]

Fifth, identity states are driven by needs, fears, attachments, defensive, maneuvers, coping mechanisms, and this highly charged quality of an identity state makes it unlikely that the person involved will be engaged in self-observation. [Pg.162]

Risk assessment uses the resuits of the hazard identification and vuinerabiiity anaiysis to determine the probabiiity of a specified outcome from a given hazard that affects a community with known vuinerabiiities and coping mechanisms (risk equais hazard times vuinerabiiity). The probabiiity may be presented as a numericai range (i.e., 30% to 40% probabiiity) or in reiative terms (i.e., iow, moderate, or high risk). Major objectives of risk assessment inciude... [Pg.12]

There were exacerbations of and deterioration of stability in psychiatric illness. Some of this was due to lack of access to proper medications, but again the stress of living in the shelter environment took its toll on individual coping mechanisms. We were fortunate in this shelter to have a top-notch team of Red Cross mental health workers and huge support of the local psychiatric community. We were getting daily visits by more than one psychiatrist during the time 1 was there. [Pg.202]

Individuals and groups who are refugees may be disoriented and traumatized but may retain their creativity in survival methods. Individuals and communities who experience disasters may have already established coping mechanisms and methods for survival. [Pg.583]

Dienone-phenol rearrangements are mechanistically diverse. They may involve 1,2-shifts of the Wag-ner-Meerwein type, or of the benzil-benzilic acid kind 1,3-shifts by a Claisen-Cope mechanism 1,5-sigmatropic shifts Favorskii-like reactions and other types. They may also be induced photochemically. A number of reviews are available, which discuss mechanistic aspects in detail. In this chapter emphasis is put on preparative aspects of these reactions and the examples are organized on a structural basis, stressing the new bond(s) formed. [Pg.803]

Furthermore, the oxy-Cope rearrangement of allenic cycloheptane alcohol 47 (NaOEt, THF, 20 °C, 12 h, 80%) gave rise only to ring-enlarged product 48 without transannular cyclization (equation 15) . The above transformations can be rationalized either by the fragmentation-recombination mechanism or by a concerted oxy-Cope mechanism. ... [Pg.747]

There is also a psychological aspect to addiction. This is where phrases like learned behavior are often used. Someone who is addicted to drugs has developed a certain set of behaviors in response to particular situations. For many, drugs are a coping mechanism for certain emotional states like depression, loneliness, stress, or even fatigue. When an addict develops a particular pattern of behavior in response to these feelings. [Pg.72]
