Whole BU populations may also move. Honeybees swarm and fly to establish new hives when crowded. Microbes migrate in the soil to exploit new food sonrces, as when oil is spilled in a local area. Earthworms retreat from dry or cold conditions. Even plant popnlations move when conditions change from those that can easily sustain growth to those that cannot. Even the most sessile of organisms usually have a mobile phase during which they can adjust to new environmental conditions by moving. 

Sessile bacteria are measured either by analysing deposits taken from the machine, or by using a fouling monitor, or following the rate and nature of deposition on a reference surface in the machine using either a microscope to see individual sessile cells of enumerating some of the microbes present by plating the actual deposit. 

The sessile bio-film in a paper machine contains many different types of microbes. Many can not be recovered using conventional plating media and specialised techniques may be needed. 

Sessile microorganisms do not attach directly to the actual surface, but rather to a thin layer of organic matter adsorbed on the surface (Fig. 10.9, Stages 1 and 2). As microbes attach to and multiply.
