This latter value (tp) is given by power analysis software ancl can be obtained as a power curve. Figure 11.24 shows a series of power curves giving the samples sizes required to determine a range of differences. From these curves, for example, it can be seen that a sample size of 3 will be able to detect a difference of 0.28 with a power of 0.7 (70% of time) but that a sample size of 7 would be needed to increase this power to 90%. In general, power analysis software can be used to determine sample sizes for optimal experimental procedures. [Pg.254]

Ethanol concentration in the fermentation broth is determined by using gas chromatography (HP 5890 series II with HP Chemstation data processing software, Hewlett-Packard, Avondale, PA) with a Poropak Q Column, and a Hewlett-Packard model 3380A integrator. A flame ionisation detector (FID) is used to determine ethanol. The oven temperature is maintained at 180 °C, and the injector and detector temperature are maintained at 240 °C. The sample taken from the fermentation media has to be filtered and any internal standard must be added for analysis based on internal standard methods otherwise, the area under the peak must be compared with known standard samples for calculation based on external standard methods. [Pg.257]

The transformation software will carry out a similar analysis and if more than one ion series is present will link the appropriate ions together and produce a transformed spectrum containing the relevant number of molecular species. [Pg.175]

Setup an Automated Test Series. Before testing can begin the user must identify the specimen bars in the magazine and specify the test conditions. This is accomplished with setup routines which prompt the user to define the test series. At various points the user is given the opportunity to go back and correct erroneous entries. The information provided by the user is stored in a queue file to be accessed later by the data acquisition software. [Pg.49]

Mathematical models require computation to secure concrete predictions. Successes in relatively simple cases spurs interest in more complex situations. Somewhat specialized computer hardware and software have emerged in response to these demands. Examples are the high-end processors with vector architecture, such as the Cray series, the CDC Cyber 205, and the recently announced IBM 3090 with vector attachment. When a computation can effectively utilize vector architecture, such machines will out-perform even the most powerful conventional scalar machine by a substantial margin. Such performance has given rise to the term supercomputer. ... [Pg.237]

One of the first studies to predict log P by using potential energy fields calculated using the GRID and CoMFA approaches was done by Kim [60]. The author investigated H, CH3 and H2O probes, and calculated the best models using the hydro-phobic probe H2O for relatively small series (20 or less compounds each) of furans, carbamates, pyridines and pyrazines. A similar study was performed by Waller [61] who predicted a small series of 24 polyhalogenated compounds. Recently, Caron and Ermondi [62] used a new version of Cruciani s software, VolSurf [63], to predict the octanol-water and alkane-water partition coefficients for 152 compounds with r = 0.77, q = 0.72, SDEP = 0.60 for octanol-water and r = 0.76, q = 0.71, SDEP = 0.85 for alkane-water. [Pg.392]
