Sequence of partial sums

Evaluating this sum for n= 1,2, 3,4, 5 yields the sequence of partial sums ... [Pg.6]

If we now look closely at this new sequence of partial sums, we may be able to deduce that the sum of the first u terms is 5 = 2 —1. In general, for a geometric series obtained by summing the members of... [Pg.6]

Scottish mathematician Muirhead. According to Muirhead, instead of looking at the original sequences, one should consider the corresponding sequences of partial sums and base the judgment of dominance on the latter. Hence, if we are to compare the two sequences... [Pg.227]

Partial ordering is an important tool of discrete mathematics, which has found visible application in chemistry [68-75]. The beginning started in 1903 with Scottish mathematician Muirhead [76], who considered ordering of sequences of the same length, such as A (a a2, aj,. .. a ) and B (bj, bj, bj,. .. bj. To do this, he first constructed the corresponding sequences of partial sums, the elements of which involve an increasing number of sequence terms ... [Pg.202]

Key reference for this section is [Asmussen (2003)]. Given the discrete probability density K -) on N, t = Tj j=o,i,... is the sequence of partial sums of an IID sequence of variables distributed according to K -), that is To = 0 and the sequence of inter-arrival times vj — Tj i j=i 2,... is HD, Ti K -). We call r renewal process on N associated to K -). r may be also viewed as a point process, that is as a random subset of N U 0, so, for example, n t means that there exists j such that Tj = n. Actually, the points in r will be called renewals or renewal points. If tq is a N-valued random variable independent of r, then we call tq + r delayed renewal process and tq is the delay. Delayed or not, renewal processes enjoy the... [Pg.202]

As an example of more complex systems and descriptions, the Ni-Mg system is shown in Fig. 2.32 (adapted from Levinsky 1997). In (a) an isobaric section of the diagram is shown (a low pressure has been considered in order to have a certain extension of the gas phase which consists essentially of Mg vapour). In Fig 2.32(b) there is an isothermal section of the diagram at 700°C. Notice, for different values of pressure, the change in the sequence of phases stable at different compositions. A value of the pressure close to atmosphere is approached at the top of the figure. In Fig 2.32(c) the usual Tlx diagram is shown. This can be considered an isobaric phase diagram if pressure is relatively low but still higher than the sum of the equilibrium partial pressures of the components. [Pg.47]

The coenzyme pyridoxal 5 -phosphate is required for the reactions in both (9) and (11). The sum of (10) and (11) gives (9), so that tryptophan synthetase is indeed a multienzyme complex catalyzing a sequence of reactions. The intermediate indole cannot be detected when the overall reaction is carried out, although the native enzyme will catalyze the partial reactions [(10) and (11)] 50 to 100 times more efficiently than the isolated subunits.86 88... [Pg.200]

We observe that the first component of the first sequence is greater than that of the second sequence, but the reverse order for the second components, i.e. 4 > 3 but 5 < 6. Hence the sequences (7) are an incomparable pair. Both T4 and T5 are comparable with T3 = 4 + 2 whose partial sum is (4, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6) which majorizes both partial sums shown in eqn. (7). [Pg.16]

For our case of the sequences for C and L we obtain the following partial sums ... [Pg.229]

Comparison of the deduced amino acid sequence of IpsAl with a partial amino acid sequence of purified LPS 1 revealed matches (with a few exceptions discussed below) that indicated that IpsAl encodes the predominant LPS 1 subunit. Analysis of the deduced amino-acid sequence of LpsAl confirmed that it harbors three modules, each responsible for the recruitment of an amino acid of the tripeptide substituent (Scheme 7) (55). Also, sequence data have demonstrated that both LPS 1 and LPS 2 are separately encoded enzymes and not breakdown products of a much larger NRPS enzyme (55,67). In contrast to the more common arrangement of catalytic domains in NRPS elongation modules, the first module of LPS 1 lacks an N-terminal C-domain. This suggests that the C-domain catalyzing formation of the peptide bond between 1 and the first amino add of the tripeptide chain could be associated with the initiation module LPS 2 (a less likely possibility is that this is a stand-alone condensation domain yet to be identified). The size of the native LPS complex has been estimated to be between 500 and 550 kDa, roughly the sum of four modules contained within the two LPS subunits. [Pg.69]

In mathematics, a sequence is a set of quantities ordered by integers. A series is the sum of a sequence. A series can have an infinite number of terms (n oo), or it can be a partial sum of n terms. In a geometric series, each term is the product of the preceding term times x ... [Pg.49]

The final result for the perturbative approach is given without proof. Using a time-ordered, double diagrammatic technique, it can be shown that includes a sum of 48 terms, each corresponding to a diagram that specifies a time-ordered sequence of individual interactions. Quantum interference among these paths leads to a partial cancellation whenever proper dephasing is not relevant. [Pg.478]

Suggestive examples that show the generality of such a model include the case of a general lattice random walk in (1 + 1) dimension, Figure 1.4(A), and the case of a directed walk in 1 + d dimension, that is the process (n, S ) =o,i,..., with S, like before, the partial sums of an IID sequence X, but this time Xi is a discrete random variable taking values in Z , with P(Xi = 0) > 0. Also in these cases we define if ( ) as the distribution of the returns to the origin of course it is very well possible that J if(n) < 1, like for d > 3 or if the walk is asymmetric. [Pg.13]

The for -cluster for KAS production from S. kasugaensis M 338-Ml [DSM 40819] has been partially sequenced on four DNA fragments (see Table 2.7), which sum up to a length of 22.4 kb altogether. From these data a preliminary map of the to-cluster can be drawn as given in Figure 2.2. Also, a tentative biosynthetic pathway was proposed by these authors, which we extend to the one outlined in Figure 2.7. The pathway involves three phases, (i) the cyclitol pathway, (ii) the 6-deoxyhexosamine pathway which is postulated to form the... [Pg.37]

Sodium ions have been proposed to bind to N3 of guanine or adenine and the 02 of cytosine or thymine in the minor groove of the DNA dodeeamer referred to as the Dickerson-Drew-B-DNA dodecamer. This sequence, the subjeet of several X-ray erystal structures extending to sub-Angstrom resolution, eontains a run of A T base pairs known as an A-tract. All monovalent cation sites are only partially oceupied in these struetures. Beeause sodium ions are diffieult to distinguish from water molecules using erystallographie teehniques, a bond-valence sum approaeh was employed in the analysis by Williams and eo-workers, who proposed that the DNA minor... [Pg.795]
