The common causes of thyrotoxicosis are shown in Table 41-6.29,30 Thyrotoxicosis can be related to the presence or absence of excess hormone production (hyperthyroidism). Graves disease is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism. Thyrotoxicosis in the elderly is more likely due to toxic thyroid nodules or multinodular goiter than to Graves disease. Excessive intake of thyroid hormone may be due to overtreatment with prescribed therapy. Surreptitious use of thyroid hormones also may occur, especially in health professionals or as a self-remedy for obesity. Thyroid hormones can be obtained easily without a prescription from health food stores or Internet sources.

In 1997 a study was iititiated to examine the capacity of the Cooper River to self-remediate if source input was reduced or eliminated from tire system. Evaluate Effectiveness on the Basis of Outputs and Acceptance Once the system has been implemented on its chosen site, its effectiveness needs to be evaluated at frequent intervals so that corrective action can be taken in the event of problems. The first criterion for success is that the system must generate unique insights into the causes of errors and accidents, which would not otherwise have been apparent. Second, the system must demonstrate a capability to specify remedial strategies that, in the long term, lead to enhanced safety, environmental impact and plant losses. Finally, the system must be owned by the workforce to the extent that its value is accepted and it demonstrates its capability to be self-sustaining. 

The emulsion blocking mechanism involves formation of emulsion in the pores either by self-emulsification of water-based filtrate with the crude oil, or oil filtrate from an oil-based fluid emulsifying formation water. The improvement came in the form of the coherent-potential approximation (CPA) (Soven 1967, Taylor 1967, Velicky et al 1968), which remedied the lack of self-consistency exhibited by the ATA. The SRCO catalytic combustion unit treats volatile organic compound (VOC) laden process exhaust air. SRCO stands for self-recuperative catalytic oxidizer. The SRCO can be furnished as a complete operating vacuum extraction and catalytic oxidation system or as a stand-alone catalytic oxidizer to interface with an existing vacuum extraction and/or air stripper system. HD-SRCO stands for halogenated destruction self-recuperative catalytic oxidizer. This system is basically the same as the SRCO system, except that it remediates halogenated hydrocarbons using a different catalyst.
