Self-destruction

Double seals require some type of support system. The reason is simple. With two seals mounted onto the same shaft, one seal is the principal or primary seal and the other becomes the secondary or back up seal already installed. If the primary seal is performing its function and sealing the pumped liquid, the. secondary. seal would be running dry, overheat, burn and self-destruct. Then when the crucial moment comes, we won t have a second seal to assume the ftinctions, which was the original reason to consider a dual seal. [Pg.198]

Other uses of tracer rounds have been to initiate a self-destruct charge (Vol 7,110) which prevents unexploded antiaircraft shells from falling to the ground. A recent development introduced the inclusion of oxamide to slow the... [Pg.986]

Imagine you are an alien. From Mars, to keep things simple. You are given the assignment, should you accept it, to report on the use of cars by humans. Please read on - this book will not self-destruct in a few seconds. ... [Pg.128]

According to De Broglie an electron in a Bohr orbit is associated with a standing wave. To avoid self destruction by interference an integral number of wavelengts are required to span the orbit of radius r, which implies n — 2nr, or nh/2n = pr, which is the Bohr condition. As a physical argument the wave conjecture is less plausible, but not indefensible. One possible interpretation considers the superposition of several waves rather than a single monochromatic wave to simulate the behaviour of a particle. [Pg.197]

But 14C is radioactive, meaning that atoms of 14C occasionally self-destruct to form a beta particle, and an atom of 14N ... [Pg.384]

In addition to energy production, mitochondria play a role in several other cellular activities. For example, mitochondria help regulate the self-destruction of cells (apoptosis). They are also necessary for the production of substances such as cholesterol and heme (a component of hemoglobin, the molecule that carries oxygen in the blood). [Pg.13]

The patient with histrionic personality disorder (HPD) craves attention from others and resorts to excessive displays of emotion to obtain it. Like the narcissistic patient, the histrionic demands to be the center of attention but typically without the haughty arrogance of the narcissist. They are also manipulative and easily frustrated like the antisocial patient but able to experience remorse and are generally more law abiding. Finally, the histrionic patient experiences mood instability much like the borderline patient but is typically not as severely impaired. Whereas the borderline patient is frequently self-destructive and feels chronically empty, the histrionic patient is usually not prone to these more severe disturbances. [Pg.323]

You can pull some tricks when you understand the failure sequence Ordinarily - when a diode does a reverse voltage break-over - the current rises catastrophically, persists as a near-short till the Junction heats self destructs, usually shorts then burns open - and then the dead silicon freezes. [Pg.18]

The precise manner in which it self-destructs depends on its own mass and that of its companion, but also on the nature of the latter and the distance between them. The detailed mechanism of the explosion remains somewhat of a mystery. This is because there seems to be some diversity within the SNla class of events. As things are going at present, a new division will soon be necessary (see Appendix 2). [Pg.155]

In this case, we must examine the effect of an asymmetrical explosion on the final result of the self-destruction of a very massive black hole, that is, the supernova remnant and black hole. Such asymmetrical supernovas may explain a fair number of gamma bursts, which have remained a deep mystery up to now. Beams and jets are more than ever in the news in astrophysics. [Pg.161]

When the halogen in the precursor is exceptionally mobile as an anion, even chloro compounds may give poor yields due to extensive self-destruction. For example, chloromethyl methyl ether can be expediently converted into methoxymethyllithium only if sodium/lithium alloy is used and a carefully elaborated protocol is meticulously followed . In the case of 7-chloronorbomadiene, the lithium/4,4 -di-ferf-butylbiphenyl radical anion has to be employed to further reduce the contact time between 7-norbornadienyllithium and its labile precursor. Many reductive metal insertions into... [Pg.439]

A. Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is a complex, highly regulated process by which a cell self-destructs in an organized manner. [Pg.213]

Melrose (1971) reviewed the instances in which direct comparisons of the stabilities of native and immobilized enzyme pairs were reported In 30 cases the insoluble enzyme was more stable, in 8 the soluble, whilst there was little difference in the remaining 12 cases. Immobilization does not lead necessarily to stabilization ho ever, this is mainly trae in the immobilization of self-destructing enzymes (proteinases). A comprehensive review on enzyme stabilization by immobilization has been written byKlibanov (1979). [Pg.329]
