Self-feedback

In these kinds of experiential event, however, there will normally be a tutor on hand to make the necessaiy feedback explicit should the participant fall to perceive it, and perhaps too to confront him or her with its significance. This kind of external prompt to insight and action is of course missing in most everyday management. One of the objectives of this book is to help managers to heighten their awareness of their behaviour and its consequences. In other words, to learn the art of self-feedback from experience.

Sensors. One growth area for electronic ceramics is in sensor appHcations. Sensors (qv) are devices that transform nonelectrical inputs into electrical outputs, thus providing environmental feedback. Smart, or intelligent, sensors also allow for mechanisms such as self-diagnosis, recovery, and adjustment for process monitoring and control (see Process control). 

A third reason is that Gibbs made no effort to promote or popularize his results. He seems to have been a solitary, self-contained, and self-sufficient thinker, confident in his ability, who worked at his own unhurried pace, neither needing nor wanting feedback from others. An attitude of detachment from the work of his students plus his own solitary habit of work is undoubtedly responsible for the fact that Gibbs founded no school or group of students to develop his ideas and exploit his discoveries.

An answer to the first test gives immediate feedback the answer to the second is in the back of the book, along with the setup for the calculation. 

Furthermore, mentors are only human. They are therefore prone fo making the occasional mistake when advising their mentees. This, in turn, might result in criticisms from the mentee. A mentor must be able to accept these and other t) es of feedback in a non-defensive way, a reaction that is certainly promoted by a healthy self-confidence. 

Normally, circulating glucocorticoids (of which cortisol is the most prominent in humans) cause feedback inhibition of ACTH release so that cortisol secretion is, to some extent, self-limiting. However, many patients suffering from major depression have an increased concentration of plasma cortisol but reduced ACTH secretion. The latter abnormality seems to be partly due to a reduction in the number of CRF receptors in the pituitary, although it is thought that decreased ACTH secretion could provoke the adrenal hyperplasia which is common in depression. This would result in excessive secretion of cortisol and contribute to the inhibition of ACTH release (Musselman and Nemeroff 1993).

We have planned every chapter to be self-contained. Each commences with a general overview, before the core material is presented in depth this is followed by a list of questions that should prove useful for both students and their lecturers. Finally, there are several key articles, followed by a list of further references. Many of the chapters in this book have been tested out on our students. Not only did they report that the chapters were all excellent (in feedback sessions that were obviously not blind ) they also informed us that they particularly liked this reference format. They found it useful when writing essays, preparing projects and, most importantly, when cramming for exams. 

Kauffman also considers that autocatalytic reactions are a necessary precondition for biogenesis processes, as they can wind themselves up via self-amplifying feedback processes until a critical boundary has been reached. The next step would then be the transition from autocatalysis to self-organisation, similar to the transition from unstructured water to convection cells (the Benard instability) (Davies, 2000). 

An automatic controller is an error-sensitive, self-correcting device. It takes a signal from the process and feeds it back into the process. Therefore, closed-loop control is referred to as feedback control.
