Based on the notion of sustainable development as a regulative idea outlined above, the link between sustainable development and education can be summarized as follows. Sustainable development is part and parcel of a general educational task, aimed at empowering the young generation to design their conditions of life on a more humane scale. It is based on an educational notion, which focuses on humans self-development and self-determination as they interact with, and reflect on, the world, with others, and with themselves. Education relates to the ability to contribute to the design of society in a reflected and responsible manner in terms of sustainable future development. [Pg.23]

Participation and self-determination are seemingly two opposites. The word self in self-determination aims at complete control while participation has the notion of sharing which means that there is no complete control but most probably a compromise. Once one looks only at the meaning of internal self-determination, this concept of complete control does not hold anymore. [Pg.251]

This notion shows international self-determination and classic minorities belong together. The link between internal self-determination and classic minorities is fair. Depending on the circumstances, the same group of persons can be a people or a minority. Recognizing the right to internal self-determination for classic minorities in Europe overcomes historical inconsistencies, solves definitional problems and moves international law one step closer to reality. [Pg.276]

I win provide additional support for the introduction of self-determination as the central notion to consider for the regulation of relations among substate national groups in the next chapter, where 1 define nationhood and explain its relation to self-determination. [Pg.69]

Political elements of nationhood (such as claims to political autonomy or self-determination) are recognized by many authors, but their notions of nationhood also include other elements that go beyond this particular type of political culture. Thus, it could be objected that although it may be necessary to establish the presence of a political culture of self-determination in order to be able to distinguish between national and ethnic groups, my definition is too narrow in its focus on political culture alone. Below, I consider why the presence of such a culture, together with self-identification, is sufficient to define nationhood. [Pg.85]

The notion of nationhood I propose calls for concentrating attention on the internal constitution of a group, on its self-perception and motivation to act to fulfill its goals in relation to other national groups that also make claims to self-determination, as well as in relation to existing governments, many of which repre-... [Pg.124]

The notion that equal consideration requires that aU persons have the same fundamental status, as equal participants, in the most important decisions made in their societies is defended by AUen Buchanan in his discussion of a human tight to democracy. See Justice, Legitimacy, and Self-Determination, p. 143. [Pg.153]
