Self-cure was the second method that was used in this study. This reaction gave us some new opportunities at experimental study of the problems mentioned above. Low cure reaction rate allowed us to measure precisely all phase transformations of the monomer. Large difference in the cure rate between the catalytic and noncatalyzed reactions and small difference in the structure of network polymer formed from the same monomer (see below) allowed us to obtain interesting information on the behavior of DGET in the magnetic field during cure. [Pg.374]

These materials can be joined by mechanical self fastening methods or by mechanical fasteners. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) parts are generally joined by adhesives. Surface treatments recommended specifically for PBT include abrasion and solvent cleaning with toluene. Gas plasma surface treatments and chemical etch have been used where maximum strength is necessary. Solvent cleaning of PET surfaces is recommended. The linear film of polyethylene terephthalate (Mylar ) surface can be pretreated by aUcahne etching or plasma for maximum adhesion, but often a special treatment is unnecessary. Commonly used adhesives for both PBT and PET substrates are isocyanate cured polyesters, epoxies, and urethanes. Polyethylene terephthalate cannot be solvent cemented or heat welded. [Pg.555]

The occurrence of self-acceleration during curing of epoxy resins and epoxy-based compounds was proven by rheokinetic and calorimetric methods.53 This phenomenon can be treated formally in terms of an induction period (when the reaction is very slow in the initial stage of a process), followed by a constant rate. The synthesis of nanostructured carbon using aliphatic alcohols as selfassembling molecules has demonstrated that this strategy can be extended beyond metal oxide-based materials [38]. Recently, we have reported the synthesis of a novel carbon material with tunable porosity by using a liquid-crystalline precursor containing a surfactant and a carbon-yielding chemical, furfuryl alcohol. The carbonization of the cured self-assembled carbon precursor produces a new carbon material with both controlled porosity and electrical conductivity. The unique combination of both features is advantageous for many relevant applications. For example, when tested as a supercapacitor electrode, specific capacitances over 120 F/g were obtained without the need to use binders, additives, or activation to increase surface area [38]. The proposed synthesis method is versatile and economically attractive, and allows for the precise control of the structure. [Pg.56]

An identical mathematical description of the kinetics of curing of reactants different in chemical nature and that obtained on the basis of fundamentally different experimental methods allows us to assume that this apparent selfacceleration course of some rheokinetic parameters is common to the processes of formation of materials with a crosslinked structure. It should be emphasized once more that the self-acceleration" effect must not be identified with the self-catalysis of the reaction of interaction between epoxy monomers and diamines which is studied in detail on model compounds [116, 117]. The CURES-EC method was named because it CURES the ELECTRON CORRELATION problem in semi-empirical calculations. This is accomplished by adding multiconfiguration configuration interaction (MCCI) to the wave functions. The acronym CURES-EC stands for configuration interaction or unrestricted orbitals to relate experimental electron affinities to self-consistent field values by estimating electron correlation.
