Image analysis is an important aspect of many areas of science and engineering, and imaging will play an important role in characterizing self-assembled structures as well as in on-line process control. Development of effective noise identification and suppression, contrast enhancements, visualization, pattern recognition, and correlation algorithms should be co-opted where possible and adapted to the analysis of self-assembled structures. [Pg.144]

The S-layer protein of Sporosarcina ureae ATCC 13881, observed for the first time in 1979, has not yet been fully characterized with respect to its selfassembling ability. Surfactant micelles and bilayers are the building blocks of most self-assembly structures. One can divide the phase structures into two main groups [1) (1) those that are built of limited or discrete self-assemblies, which may be characterized roughly as spherical, prolate or cylindrical. (2) Infinite or unlimited self-assemblies whereby the aggregates are connected over macroscopic distances in one, two or three dimensions. The hexagonal phase (see below) is an example of onedimensional continuity, the lamellar phase of two-dimensional continuity, whereas the bicontinuous cubic phase and the sponge phase (see later) are examples of three-dimensional continuity. The importance of surface characterization in molecular architecture chemistry and engineering is obvious. Solid surfaces are becoming essential building blocks for constructing molecular architectures, as demonstrated in self-assembled monolayer formation [6] and alternate layer-by-layer adsorption [7]. Surface-induced structuring of liqnids is also well-known [8,9], which has implications for micro- and nano-technologies (i.e., liqnid crystal displays and micromachines). Relatively little work has been done on ORR catalysis by self-assembled mono-layers (SAMs) of metalloporphyrins.
