Detailed structure determinationshave confirmed that in all cases the lattices are built up of eight-membered crown-shaped ring molecules like Sg and Se as was expected due to the morphology of the crystals. The selenium distribution in thin sections of biological tissues has been quantitatively determined by LA-ICP-MS.103 The photograph of a cross section of the snail and the selenium LA-ICP-MS image are illustrated in Figure 9.26. Higher concentrations of selenium were found in the skin and gut compared to other parts of the snail. A comment on the question of selenium distribution versus sulphur distribution. Although they are in the same column in the periodic table, the chemistry of sulphur and selenium is probably quite different. In rain water I think specifically that the action of peroxide on SO2 is to oxidize it, but the action on selenium-4 is to reduce it. So that the probability of having sulphur and selenium behave the same in rain water, I think, is very low but also when one thinks of the possible antagonism of selenium it s behaving as a reduced selenide rather than as being oxidized to selenate. I think the chemistry of selenium has to be considered quite separately from that of sulphur. Even selenium has been suggested as a possible tracer for sulphur in the eastern United States. 

A homogeneous crystalline material is not necessarily a pure substance. Thus natural crystals of sulfur are sometimes deep yellow or brown in color, instead of light yellow. They contain some selenium, distributed at random throughout the crystals in place of some of the sulfur, the crystals being fiomogeneous. and with faces as well formed as those for pure sulfur. These crystals are a crystalline solution (or solid solution). The gold-copper alloy used in jew elry is another example of a crystalline solution. It is a homogeneous material, but its composition is variable. 

The most detailed studies of selenium distribution and speciation have been carried out for seawater. G. A. Cutter and L. S. Cutter (2001) found that selenate had generally higher concentrations in marine waters from the southern...
