Selenium in blood

Accurate determination of the biological important element, selenium, in blood serum by isotope dilution analysis using ICP-QMS with octopole collision cell (Agilent 7500ce, Tokio, Japan) is described by Schaumloffel and coworkers.55 A recovery of selenium from human serum reference material was only 78 % when hydrogen was applied as collision gas but 96.7 % using xenon as a non-reactive collision gas to eliminate isobaric interferences. Another study of distribution of selenium in selenium-deficient rats fed either sodium selenite or selenomethionine found that concentration of selenium in blood and hair increased with administered dose, but was higher for selenium administered as selenomethionine (Shiobara et al. 1998).

A significant effort was necessary to obtain accurate results for selenium in blood, plasma, and erythrocytes [27]. Iron causes a spectral interference at the selenium line at 196 nm if a continuum source background corrector is used, causing erroneous results particularly in blood and erythrocytes. Zeeman effect background correction is therefore mandatory for the determination of selenium in clinical samples. In addition, some of the previously recommended chemical modifiers were found to stabilize the different selenium species differently, so that some of them may be lost in the pyrolysis stage. A mixture of palladium and magnesium nitrates was found to solve the problem and prevent any preatomization losses [28].
