Secure File Transfer Protocol

File transfer protocol (FTP) technology is a data communication tool that allows sending, accessing, and sharing files quickly and easily through a secure environment. The user logs onto the FTP site with a valid account name and a valid password. This method allows participants to share data files instantly. 

Once you have your SAS data ready for transport, you need to determine a means to deliver it. There are many ways to send data, but you should strive for process simplicity and data security. To keep your data secure and to comply with 21 CFR-Part 11, you need to encrypt your data files for transport. The best encryption you can use is key exchange high-bit encryption software such as PGP, which creates essentially unbreakable files when used properly. Once your data files are encrypted, you can either send them on physical media such as CD-ROM or send them electronically with secure transmission software such as Secure File Transport Protocol (SFTP). If you need to send data to someone once, a CD-ROM is simple enough to produce. However, if you need to send the data repeatedly, then you should use a more automated electronic method of data exchange. Shell scripts and batch files can be written to automate the electronic data transfer process. 

File Transfer Protocol. A protocol used to move files over the Internet. Typically, you use a command line command, browser capability, or program on your computer called an FTP client to connect to an FTP server found on the Internet. Once connected to the FTP server, you can move files back and forth between your computer and the FTP server. SFTP, Secure FTP, is a more secure protocol for moving data over the Internet in which both your login information and data are encrypted during communications. 

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) FTP is used to transfer large files across the Internet or any TCP/IP network. Special servers, called FTP servers, store information and then transfer it back to FTP clients as needed. FTP servers can also be secured with a username and password to prevent unauthorized downloading (retrieval of a file from the server) or uploading (placing of a file on the server). 

Disable unused ports, file transfer protocol (FTP) connections as far as possible, and minimize keep-alive and other settings that hold a disconnected port open also reassess site strategy for security situations and measures taken [18]... 

The look, or format, of the data, network security, and file transfers is determined by the Presentation layer. It performs protocol conversion and manages data compression. Data translation and encryption are handled at this layer. Also, the character set information is determined at this level. (The character set determines which numbers represent which alphanumeric characters.)... 

The third and fourth command types discussed in Section 15.1.3 can be authenticated and secured via a standard protocol such as secure shell (ssh) (Schneier, 2000). This uses PKI to secure network traffic and provide secure interactive communications and file transfer. 

The PCs of the system administrator and a few special users have direct access to the DRX-spectrometer.s via the central Server using the FTP protocol. This special group have direct access to any files in the spectrometer s data system, i.e. data files, variou.s lists, pulse programs,... and may transfer files to and from the spectrometers. In addition, they also have the option to create or delete directories, to modify pulse programs and to do other jobs on the spectrometer s data system. As is usual in security sensitive situations, this special group require a password to acces.s the spectrometer.
