The second type of work to which wc shall restrict our di.scussion is mechanical work. As wc shall see later, confined phases can be exposed to two types of mechanical work, namely compression (dilation) and shear. In that regard, confined phases have a lot in common with bulk solids in that they are generally inhomogeneous and anisotropic in one or more spatial dimensions. Therefore, it seems sensible to cast the mechanical work term in terms of stress (t) and dimensionless strain tensors (bulk solids [12], by writing... 

It has now been established that both zirconacyclopropenes and zirconacyclopropanes can be prepared as discrete and fully characterizable species. More relevant to the present scussion is that these species can be generated by the reaction of alkynes or alkenes with ZiCp2 , as shown in equations (39) and (41). Another useful piece of information is that the formation of (46) from diphenylacetylene according to equation (41) is about 150 times as fast as that of (43) from ( )-stilbene under the same conditions, indicating that, in comparable situations, alkynes are far more reactive than alkenes towards ZrCp2 . Little definitive information is currently available on the formation of related three-membered hafiiacycles. 

To begin our di,scussion on the diffusion of reactants from the bulk fluid to the external surface of a catalyst, we shall focus attention on the flow pa,st a single catalyst pellet. Reaction takes place only on the external catalyst surface and not in the fluid surrounding it. The fluid velocity in the vicinity of the spherical pel lei will vary with position around the sphere. The hydrodynamic boundary layer is usually defined as the distance from a solid object to where the fluid velocity is 99% of the bulk velocity Similarly, the mass transfer boundarj layer thickness, 6. is defined as the distance from a solid object to where the concentration of the diffusing species reaches 99% of the bulk concentration.
