Mg. 11, 56, 17 (Davies types) and Fig. 11, 56, 18 (double coil type) are examples of efficient double surface condensers. Fig. 11, 56, 19 depicts a screw type of condenser (Friedrich pattern) the jacket is usually 10, 15 or 25 cm. long and the cone and sockets are fil9 or 24 this highly efficient condenser is employed for both reflux and for downward distillation. 

Another type of rotational viscometer is the hehcal-screw rheometer (176). This iastmment is basically a screw-type metering pump that does not pump. The measure of force is the pressure difference resulting from the rotational motion. It is possible to use a bank of pressure transducers of different sensitivities to measure viscosity over a wide range. The iastmment can be used for high temperature rheometry and to foUow polymerkation, shear and heat degradation, and other developments. 

In the screw conveyor process, solutions of poly(vinyl acetate) and catalyst are mixed in a high intensity mixer and continuously introduced to a screw-type saponification and conveyor system (270). Downstream details are similar to those found in the belt process. 

Screw-Type This type of rotary compressor, as shown in Fig. 10-80, is capable of hancmng capacities up to about 4.248 X lO" m m (25,000 fF/min) at pressure ratios of 4 1 and higher. Relatively small-diameter rotors allow rotative speeds of several thousand rev/min. Unhke the straight-lobe rotary machine, it has male and female rotors whose rotation causes the axial progression of successive sealed cavities. There are two types of hot feed extruders, one similar to the screw type cold feed extruder, except that the strip feeding the extruder is taken directly off the two-roll mill. The mill is used to further blend and heat the compound. It is then taken off the mill in strip form and fed directly into the extruder. The second type of hot feed extruder is based on the action of a ram being used to feed the compound into the extruder die (Fig. 16). The compound is placed on a two-roll mill to further blend and heat rubber. It is then taken off the mill in pig form to fill the extruder chamber.

Variation in the actual brake horsepower required to operate a mixer is the primary indicator of its performance envelope. Mixer design, whether propeller- or screw-type, is based on the viscosity of both the incoming and finished product. These variables determine the brake horsepower required to drive the mixer, which will follow variations in the viscosity of the products being mixed. As the viscosity increases so will the brake horsepower demand. Conversely, as the viscosity decreases, so will the horsepower required driving the mixer. 

For screw-type mixers, proper clearance between the rotating element and the mixer housing must be maintained to vendor specifications. If the clearance is improperly set, the mixer will bind (i.e., not enough clearance) or fail to blend properly. 

The lubrication requirements for single-screw type compressors are not severe, but in oil-flooded rotary units, the oxidizing conditions are extremely severe because fine droplets of oil are mixed intimately with hot compressed air. In some screw-type air compressors, the rotors are gear driven and do not make contact. In others, one rotor drives the other. The heaviest contact loads occur where power is transmitted from the female to the male rotor here the lubricant encounters physical conditions similar to those between mating gear teeth. This arduous combination of circumstances places a great demand on the chemical stability, and lubricating power, of the oil. 

Bottle caps made from different plastics are extensively used. Some closures are of the simple cork snap type design, but most are of the screw type. Strong, accurate threads can be molded, which represent undercuts. Simple designs should be used when permitted, such as wide-pitch threads. The thread should be designed to start about 1 /32 in. (0.08 cm) from the end of the face perpendicular to the axis of the thread. It is usually practical to mold up to 32 threads per in. more than this number can give certain molders trouble.
