Screw thermoset type

The high modulus and creep resistance of reinforced PPS compounds make them more suitable than many other plastic materials for fastening with bolts, screws, or rivets. For one-time bolted assemblies, tapped or molded-in threads with bolts screwed in three to four diameters may be used. However, with bolted assemblies where repeated assembly and disassembly of parts are expected, or if torque retention at elevated temperature is a concern, ultrasonic or molded-in metal inserts may be used. Molded-in metal inserts should be preheated to the mold temperature before being placed in the tool for molding. For assembly with self-tapping screws, BF-type or BT-type steel thread cutting screws work well, using hole sizes as recommended for phenolformaldehyde thermosets by the... [Pg.412]

Although the above are the major moulding processes for thermosets, injection moulding can now be used for the selected thermoset moulding operations. The major use of thermosets still remains with screw closures. These are made on either a multicavity platen tool (up to 96 cavities) or a rotary type press which resembles a rotary tableting machine. [Pg.217]

Injection molding is a cyclic discontinuous process used to form three-dimensional plastic parts (25. 26). Both thermoplastics and thermosets are injection molded. The process is shown schematically in Figure 11 for a reciprocating screw injection molder. This type of a machine has a screw rotating in a barrel similar to an extruder. However, here the melt flow is discontinuous and controlled via a check valve at the tip of the screw. Material is melted in the extruder, and the melt is accumulated in front of the screw tip until sufficient melt is at hand to fill the mold cavity (cavities). [Pg.596]

Molding compound is transferred in the cold state by pressure from the material hopper into the main injection chamber. Here it can be preheated before injection into the heated mould tool. Injection, through a special nozzle, can be either by ram or screw pressure. If screw feed is used, the screw must be of the type designed to process thermosets as opposed to thermoplastics. [Pg.233]

Liquid Injection Molding. Molding machines with special barrels, screws, and feed systems mix and then inject liquids into a mold cavity. Similar to reaction injection molding the two liquids, often silicone or urethane based, react to form a thermoset part. Baby bottle nipples and keycap return springs are two current silicone type applications. [Pg.3959]

Thermoplastics as well as thermosets and classic elastomers can be processed with screw injection imits. These material types will be discussed in more depth in Chapters 6 and 7. [Pg.5]
