On extruders with poor pressure-generating capability (e.g., co-rotating twin screws, multi-stage vented extruders, etc.)... 

There are several techniques available for SFA to drive a sample along the normal direction and to position it to a specified site. A common feature of these techniques is to employ a multi-stage driving system of increasing sensitivity. The apparatus developed by Israelachivili s team, for example, uses a two-stage screw as the coarse and medium control, which gives positioning accuracy of 1 /rm and 1 nm. 

It is possible that the maintenance problems with multi-stage screw compressors are substantially smaller than with piston compressors, but so far only one publication has been found [2.30] comparing the technical data and operation cost of piston- and screw compressors for two brands. Because of the problems that can potentially arise with oil-sealed pumps, there is an increasing trend to use dry pumps in many applications. It is rare to use a Buss mixer for multi-stage compounding operations. In Figure 1-4, the output of the Buss mixer is directly fed into a feed screw machine where high pressure forces the compound through a die or into a pelletizer head.
