Real polymers are more complex than these simple mechanical models. Qualitatively, when a real polymer is forced to flow through a contraction or expansion in an extrusion screw, it will exhibit viscoelastic behaviour. The polymer molecules will be elongated if forced through a contraction, or they will retract when they flow into an expansion. The effect of viscoelastic behavior in a capillary rheometer is observed in the form of recirculation flow just before the polymer enters the... [Pg.76]

The design of the extrusion screw has a significant influence on the efficiency of the hot-melt extrusion process. The function of the screw is to transfer the material inside the barrel and then to mix, to compress, and to melt the polymeric materials and to pump the molten mass through the die. Several parameters are used to define the geometrical features of the screw (Fig. 2). [Pg.2005]

In the rubber industry, the prime function of extrusion is to preform the material and, whilst several rheological problems are common to both thermoplastics and rubber compounds, the plasticization is less critical with the latter. Therefore, the rheology of the extrusion screw will not be considered here, while it is worth noting that the flow situation in a screw is far from being completely understood. [Pg.193]

The standard metering extrusion screw with its three zones (conveying, compression, and metering) basically operates like a conventional injection molding (IM) screw, as reviewed in Chapter 2. The nomenclature is the same for each (Fig. 2-3), except that no valve is used at the end of the extrusion screw (Fig. 3-7). As reviewed, extrusion screws operate at lower pressures and in a continuous mode (IM is repeatable with abrupt, completely on-off pressure changes and very fast cycles). Even though many... [Pg.101]

The heater bands have two more significant roles besides providing heat to melt the polymer. First, they supply the initial energy to heat up the hardware during start-up. An extrusion screw cannot be turned until the extruder is up to operating temperature. [Pg.45]

Chlorinated PVC can be extruded, calendered, or injection molded. Extrusion screws should be chrome plated or stainless steel. Dies should be streamlined. Injection molds should be chrome or nickel plated or stainless steel. CPVC is used for water distribution piping, industrial chemical liquid piping, outdoor skylight frames, automotive interior parts, and a variety of other applications. [Pg.109]

It relies on conical extrusion screws that mesh together to provide a series of separate material flow paths. Each rotating conical core provides two material paths, through screw feeds along the outer and inner surfaces of the core. By adding additional cones in series, additional cylindrical extrudate paths are built up. [Pg.62]

In addition to the precision tooling markets for extrusion screws and dies there is a large amount of associated equipment to complete an extrusion line. As throughput and pipe sizes have increased, the capability of this downstream equipment has also had to improve and make its contribution to high quality output. [Pg.70]

Nitriding (1928) vt. A type of case hardening in which a steel surface is reacted for hours or days with gaseous ammonia at temperatures from 480° and 540° to produce a surface hardness of about Rockwell C70 to a depth from 0.2 to 2 mm. The process is used with injection-mold cavities and extrusion screws, being less expensive and less durable with the latter than inlaid hard facing. [Pg.653]
