There are a number of general techniques suggested by the problem formulation. At the most detailed level of design, the design parameters need to be optimized in relation to performance criteria based on a nonlinear dynamic model. This points to a need for effective tools for dynamic optimization. At a more preliminary level in a hierarchy of techniques, it might be useful to evaluate steady-state performance or to carry out tests on achievable dynamic performance to eliminate infeasible options. Appropriate screening techniques are therefore needed. All these methods can use nominal models for initial analysis, but a full analysis should be based on design with uncertainty.

ES H subject matter experts provide input on appropriate controls to chemical users and their management. 

The user interface is designed using a menu technique the implementation today is in DEC S Forms Management System (FMS). It consists of a sequence of menus which allows the user to select different input and query functions. A function is selected by hitting only one key. Pre-selections on each level are available as well as a header line, providing information on the position of the current screen in the menu hierarchy. Another feature to facilitate usage of the system is the help facility for menu screens, where some fields have to be entered to specify query parameters, help is available for each field.
