Scheer studies

There have been few studies to date of the functionality and stability of AP-trapped photosynthetic reaction centers. Rhodobacter sphaeroides reaction centers were shown to remain intact following trapping with AP A8-75 (a more highly charged analog of A8-35), but neither their functionality nor their stability over time were studied[5]. Synechocystis PCC 6803 PS1 reaction centers trapped with A8-35 and deposited on a gold electrode have been shown to be electrochemically active, but their long-term stability has not been studied[12]. The photochemical activity of A8-35-trapped pea PS2 reaction centers, measured at room temperature by the accumulation of the pheophytin free radical upon illumination, was found to be intermediate between that in chaps and in P-DM solutions [A. Zehetner H. Scheer, personal communication ref. 13],... [Pg.157]

It may appear that vaccines are sui generis and that other pharmaceuticals do not exhibit the same mix of public benefits and costs. That is not so. Antibiotics and antiviral medications raise many of the same issues as vaccines. Like vaccines, they can provide protection for individuals other than the patient. For example, numerous studies have shown that the transmission of HIV from mother to fetus can be dramatically reduced if the mother is treated with an antiviral near the time of delivery (American Academy of Pediatrics 2004). Likewise, studies have suggested that the reduction of viral load that can result from effective antiviral treatment for HIV can reduce the infectiousness of an HIV positive individual (Scheer et al. 2001). [Pg.80]

Gaborik etal., 2003 Kim etal, 1997 Rasmussen etal., 1999 Scheer etal., 1996) studies. This ionic lock is key in the structure of the receptor, probably in combination with other inter- and/or intrahelical interactions, as it keeps TM6 in a relatively distorted conformation with a marked decrease of the helical twist at the level of the proline kink at Pro2886 50. As a result, the cytoplasmic end of TM6 is much closer to TM3 than would be expected from the distortion induced solely by the proline. [Pg.153]

Previous studies of the reactions of hydrogen atoms with a variety of organic solids have included olefins (Klein and Scheer, 1958), monomers (Chachaty and Schmidt, 1965), polymer fluffs (Wall and Ingalls, 1961) and carboxylic acids (Cole and Heller, 1965). [Pg.54]

The transformation of P4 in the coordination sphere of 15 VE fragments has been studied by allowing group-6 carbonyls, [M(CO)6] (M=Cr, Mo, W), and nickel cyclopentadienyl carbonyl complexes to react using Scheer s one-pot/three-components practice under thermal or photochemical conditions. Remarkably, the combination of P4, [Cr(CO)6], and the nickel dimer [ Cp Ni (CO) 2] under UV irradiation yields complexes incorporating Pj, P2, and P3 lig-... [Pg.117]

Femtosecond kinetics of photochemical charge separation in photosynthetic bacteria at low temperatures (25 K) was studied by Lautwasser, Finkele, Scheer and Zinth using Rb. sphaeroides RCs depleted of quinones. Fig. 9 (C, a) shows the initial formation of P at 920 nm followed by a very rapid relaxation with a Ti of 1.4 0.3 ps. At 794 nm and 25 K, the absorption increases very rapidly to a maximum in about 0.1 and then decays to a minimum at tD 0.5 ps. This is followed by a slow rise and a plateau after 5 ps. The early rapid-decay component with a time constant of 0.3 0.15 ps appears to be the counterpart of the 0.9-ps component at room temperature. The data points in Fig. 9 (C, b) can be fitted by a model with three time constants, namely 0.3ps, l.Aps and 1 ns. [Pg.144]

The qualitative experimental results which have been reported are in part compatible and in part incompatible with the theory. The most interesting of the experiments are those of Land-steiner and van der Scheer, who prepared azoproteins containing two different kinds of haptens and studied the antibodies produced by them. In some cases only one of the haptens was effective in antibody formation. With the azoprotein made from 3-amino-5-succinylaffiinobenzoyTp-aminophenylarsenic add, however, a serum was obtained which wotdd combine not only with the homologous antigen but also with azoproteins... [Pg.74]

A new period in the study of the precipitation reaction was initiated by the careful quantitative studies of Heidelberger and his collaborators (15) who determined the amounts of antibody and antigen in precipitates, and the similar work of Haurowitz (16) and others. Very recently, in order to test certain aspects of his detailed theory of the structure of antibodies (17), Pauling and his collaborators have carried out many quantitative experiments on the precipitation of antisera by polyhaptenic simple substances (18, 19, 20), a phenomenon first observed by Landsteiner and Van der Scheer (21). [Pg.95]

Scheer et al. (1973) extended the studies of Miller and co-workers to three other Triturus species and showed that the matrix units in these amphibians are somewhat larger than the spacer sequences. Furthermore, they established a very good correlation between the length of the matrix unit as visualized in the electron microscope and the size... [Pg.126]
