Scanning electron microscopy tensile fracture surfaces

The polymers, whose characteristics are summarized in Table 1, were melt mixed in a Brabender-like apparatus at 200 C and at two residence times 6 min, at 2 r.p.m. and further 10 min. at 32 r.p.m. The blend compositions are listed in Table 2. After premixing, cylindrical specimens were obtained directly by extrusion using a melting-elastic miniextruder (CSI max mixing extruder mod. CS-194), Thermal and tensile mechanical tests were performed on these specimens by an Instron Machine (mod. 1122) at room temperature and at cross-head speed of 10 mm/min. Also made were morphological studies by optical microscopy of sections microtomed from tensile samples and scanning electron microscopy of fractured surfaces of samples broken at liquid nitrogen temperature. Further details on the experimental procedures and on the techniques used are reported elsewhere . [Pg.128]

The micrographs obtained from scanning electron microscopy are shown in Fig. 54 for the tensile fractured surface of 50 CR/50 XNBR self-crosslinked blend filled with 10 phr layered silicate (Fig. 54a) and for the same blend without any... [Pg.155]

Measurements. The morphology of the blends was studied by optical microscopy (Leitz Dialux Pol), transmission electron microscopy (Jeol 100 U), and scanning electron microscopy (Cambridge MK II). Ultramicrotome sections were made with an LKB Ultratome III. Samples for scanning electron microscopy were obtained by fracturing sheets at low temperature. The fracture surfaces were etched with a 30% potassium hydroxide solution to hydrolyse the polycarbonate phase. Stress-relaxation and tensile stress-strain experiments were performed with an Instron testing machine equipped with a thermostatic chamber. Relaxation measurements were carried out in flexion (E > 108 dyn/cm2) or in traction (E < 108 dyn/cm2). Prior to each experiment, the samples were annealed to obtain volumetric equilibrium. [Pg.332]

Seldon [10] measured the weld line strength and impact, and flexural and tensile properties of injection-molded specimens of glass fiber-reinforced polyamide 6 and talc-filled polypropylene (PP). Further information was obtained by examination of fracture surfaces by scanning electron microscopy. [Pg.176]

The evaluation of the mechanical properties of PLA-MCC composites demonstrated that the tensile modulus was improved with increased MCC content, but tensile strength and elongation at break decreased [61]. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the MCC remained as aggregates of crystalline cellulose fibrils, which explains the poor mechanical properties [61]. Furthermore, the fracture surfaces of MCC composites were indicative of poor adhesion between MCC and the PLA matrix. [Pg.302]

In order to observe the composition microstructure, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images were made on the tensile test fracture surfaces of chosen composites... [Pg.90]
