Satinizing

Thermal Applications. The protection of precious-metal thermocouples in high temperature pyrometry is an important appHcation of vitreous siHca. Although satin tubing is usually employed, transparent tubes are superior for protecting couples when used in a reducing atmosphere (220). 

Very small quantities of acetate staple are dyed, however, large quantities of acetate filament are found in satin, taffeta, and tricot fabrics these are usually dyed open-width on a jig owing to thek inclination to crease or crack easily. A typical dyeing procedure on the jig involves addition of acetic acid and dispersing agent over two ends at 50°C. The disperse dye is added over two ends and the dyebath temperature is gradually raised to 80°C in 5°C increments with two passes at each temperature. The dyeing is completed after 30—60 min at 80°C. 

Bright Nickel. Nickel as electroplated from pure nickel salts is a dull grey, satin—like deposit that has to be buffed to obtain a bright finish. 

Fabrics of Woven Fibers For cake filtratiou these fabrics are the most common type of medium. A wide variety of materials are available some popular examples are listed in Table 18-10, with ratings for chemical and temperature resistance. In addition to the mate-ri of the fibers, a number of construction characteristics describe the filter cloth (1) weave, (2) style number, (3) weight, (4) count, (5) ply, and (6) yarn number. Of the many types of weaves available, only four are extensively used as filter media plain (square) weave, twill, chain weave, and satin.

Indicate, if known, preferred bag material that will withstand environment, e.g., fibers of glass, polyester, Teflon , Nomex , polypropylene, polyethylene, cotton, wool, nylon, Orion , Dacron , and Dynel . The type of weave of fiber should be recommended by the manufacturer. The fabrics may be felted or woven [47,48] in weaves of plain, satin, or twill, and should be resistant to any corrosive material in the solid particles or the gas stream.

Fused silica is manufactured in both translucent and clear, transparent forms the particular requirements govern the form to be used. The translucent variety can be obtained with a sandy, satin or glazed finish. An interesting historical account of the early work on the practical manipulation of fused silica has been given by W. A. Shenstone (1902).

Various finishes can be achieved — gloss, satin (or egg-shell) or matt. This is accomplished by the addition of particles of size 1-5 pm of, for example, silica, china clay or the white pigment, TiCK The degree of mattness depends on various factors, such as particle size, surface treatment of the particles, rate of film formation, and the polymer composition, e.g., urethane/acrylate compared with epoxy/acrylate. The former requires smaller particles larger particles cannot be used as they create a rough surface.

Philips DAP has also forged a few strategic marketing alliances, for example with Beiersdorf for the development and production of the additive for the Cool Skin shaver.
