Simple drug possession is a low law enforcement priority in cities where police budgets are badly stretched. Further, unless someone is acmally caught in possession of drugs, he or she cannot be arrested and forced into involuntary treatment. Some hard-core homeless drug users express a quite realistic view of their predicament. One, known only as Tommy, said it this way to a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle ... [Pg.23]

A few months ago the San Francisco Chronicle reported a survey on the response of industrial corporations to women s issues, shown in Fig. 18. Women judge companies with respect to their policies concerning maternal leave and released time for family needs and especially with respect to facilities for child care. A survey of this kind was highly unlikely 15 or 20 years ago. Again, we see the broadening of boundaries between home and office. It is discouraging that in the listed ten best companies, chemical industry is represented very poorly. [Pg.10]

For a final example, again from the San Francisco Chronicle, Fig. 20 illustrates the increasing social responsibility of industry. Wealthy industrialists have always practiced philanthropy but now we have a business school in a major university presenting formal instruction to business students on how to be an effective philanthropist. The clear implication here is that the support of cultural institutions is no longer an incidental item but an integral part of a business plan. [Pg.10]

Unfortunately, many people do not understand these truths. For example, when asked by a defense attorney in a celebrated homicide case what the rate of error in a blood test was, the assistant district attorney replied that their testing laboratories had no percentage of error because they have not committed any errors San Francisco Chronicle, June 29, 1994, p, 4). [Pg.90]

As to the size of farms, the 1964 census shows the average farm was about 350 acres. Recent studies in California, as reported in the San Francisco Chronicle, concluded that 640 acres is more realistic as an efficient and competitive enterprise. However, in certain crop areas such as the Imperial Valley of California, up to 1,500-2,000 acres are needed and in the Palouse area of Eastern Washington, 1,600 acres are considered the best size for wheat and pea farms (14). [Pg.84]

Deborah Denno is one of the most influential women lawyers in America, and has taught at Fordham Law School since 1991. She also argues for a link between lead and crime (San Francisco Chronicle, September 26,2007). She explored 3,000 factors in 1,000 children who were followed from birth to age 22, and found a highly significant link between observed lead toxicity and the likelihood of criminal activity. Lead poisoning was the best predictor at age 7 for aggressive behavior in school, juvenile delinquency, and eventually criminal violence. [Pg.120]
