Turbulence is not the asset in water that it is in air. In air, we saw that some turbulence is required to bring the molecules out of the chemical boundary layer. That may also be needed in water to move molecules away from the bottom surface. Turbulence away from the surface tends to break up the plumes of molecules that are diagrammed in Figure 4.4. Those plumes are the key to successful detection of an underwater object that is releasing the molecules of interest. One result of the ONR experiment at San Clemente Island, off San Diego, California, was a better understanding of the formation, persistence, and dissipation of these plumes. When a well-formed plume is available, it often becomes possible to follow it to its source see Chapters 5 and 6.

The first major activity undertaken by the Marine Farm Project involved studies of Macrocystis transplants moored on artificial structures in oceanic environments. The largest of three such experiments consisted of a three-hectare structure designed and installed by the Naval Undersea Center off San Clemente Island, about 100 km from the mainland. The structure consisted of a grid or network of ropes, deployed 15 to 20 m beneath the sea surface by a system of cables, buoys, and anchors ( ). Overall water depth ranged from about 70 to 150 m. Approximately 130 adult Macrocystis transplants were relocated onto the grid during summer and fall. 1974. The source of transplants was a nearby kelp bed at San Clemente Island which...

The activity of serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) isoenzymes (total, intestinal, liver, and bone-specific) was measured as previously described (11,12). Serum intact osteocalcin was measured by an immunoradiometric assay using a commercial kit (Immutopics, Inc., San Clemente, CA). Serum IGF-I concentration was measured by RIA after the binding proteins were removed by a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) procedure (8,13). Serum leplin concentration was measured by RIA using a conunercial kit (Linco Research, St. Charles, MO). 

During this period, Fred Anson (California Institute of Technology) had founded the San Clemente Surfing and Discussion Society as a means of stimulating informal discussion among electrochemists. The society s name proved to be an impediment to some scientists receiving permission and/or funds to attend the discussions. Consequently, Mark, who was the Society s secretary and editor of its newsletter, held a contest among the membership for a new name. The winner was to receive a platinum-coated bottle of Cutty Sark. California beaches also have a higher level of these pellets. Pre-production plastic pellets accounted for more than 90% of the debris collected in a study of beach sites from Seal Beach to San Clemente in Orange County (Moore et al. 2001) and 94% of the debris items found during the EPA s Harbor Studies Program (US EPA 1992). In the Combined Sewer Overflow Studies Program, pellets were found in municipal wastewater treatment systems of Philadelphia and Boston (Plastic Pellets in the Aquatic Environment 1992).
