Sample positioning

To describe the X-ray imaging system the projection of 3D object points onto the 2D image plane, and nonlinear distortions inherent in the image detector system have to, be modelled. A parametric camera model based on a simple pinhole model to describe the projection in combination with a polynomal model of the nonlinear distortions is used to describe the X-ray imaging system. The parameters of the model are estimated using a two step approach. First the distortion parameters for fixed source and detector positions are calculated without any knowledge of the projection parameters. In a second step, the projection parameters are calculated for each image taken with the same source and detector positions but with different sample positions. [Pg.485]

Depth-sensing nanoindentation is one of the primary tools for nanomechanical mechanical properties measurements. Major advantages to this technique over AFM include (1) simultaneous measurement of force and displacement (2) perpendicular tip-sample approach and (3) well-modeled mechanics for dynamic measurements. Also, the ability to quantitatively infer contact area during force-displacement measurements provides a very useful approach to explore adhesion mechanics and models. Disadvantages relative to AFM include lower force resolution, as well as far lower spatial resolution, both from the larger tip radii employed and a lack of sample positioning and imaging capabilities provided by piezoelectric scanners. [Pg.212]

However, some of the conditions in the alpha ion source do differ significantly from those in conventional ion-molecule sources. It should be stressed that only those surfaces that actually come in contact with the sample need to be bio-compatible and the major parts of the valve can still be manufactured from stainless steel. The actual structure of the valve varies a little from one manufacturer to another but all are modifications of the basic sample valve shown in figure 13. The valve usually consists of five parts.
