Within weeks, Mendeleev s Periodic Table was presented to the Russian Chemical Society and was published in the Journal of Russian Physical Chemistry, it was published later the same year in the prestigious German journal Zeitschrift fur Chemie. Revised and expanded tables appeared in the Annalen der Chemie in 1872. Since the German journals were known to every research chemist, Mendeleev s Periodic Table became widely known almost at once. Although details of the tables were subject to argument, and many newly discovered elements were later added, the basic principle of organization behind the table was quickly accepted. [Pg.776]

The UNITHERM concept is based upon the NIKIET experience in the design of marine nuclear installations. Successes achieved and the existing solutions in design, nuclear and thermal physics, hydrodynamics, metallurgy, water chemistry, etc., in combination with some new features, made it possible to develop a NPP design which has become the laureate of the competition for SS NPP designs established by the Russian Nuclear Society in 1994. The reactor facility has met the requirements for the so-called fourth generation nuclear reactors later formulated by the international community and in some cases, was able to meet even more strict requirements. [Pg.157]

Perhaps the older brothers and sisters had to take care of each other. Their mother was determined to give young Dimitrij the opportunity to study science, and she tried, without success, to get him approved as a student at the University of Moscow. She traveled with him further to St Petersbmg. There he was given the opportunity to study mathematics, physics and chemistry and was so successfirl that he was offered the chance to travel in Europe to further improve his knowledge. In Heidelberg he learned spectroscopy from Bunsen and Kirchhoff At the age of 32, in 1866, he was appointed professor of chemistry at the University of St Petersburg. He wrote a book Principles of Chemistry and founded the Russian Chemical Society in 1868. Above all, however, he is remembered for The Periodic System of the Elements. [Pg.63]

Besides good personal contacts, Frumkin also thought that good scientific journals were needed for progress. Initially, the Journal Zhumal Russkogo Khimicheskogo Obshchestva ( Journal of the Russian Chemical Society ) was the only chemical journal in the USSR, but clearly it could not meet all the needs of modem scientific life. Fmmkin therefore initiated several new scientific journals. One of the most important of these was the Zhumal Fizicheskoy Khimii ( Journal of Physical Chemistry ). Its first issue was published in 1930, and Fmmkin remained on its Editorial Board for 37 years. [Pg.79]
