Within weeks, Mendeleev s Periodic Table was presented to the Russian Chemical Society and was published in the Journal of Russian Physical Chemistry, it was published later the same year in the prestigious German journal Zeitschrift fur Chemie. Revised and expanded tables appeared in the Annalen der Chemie in 1872. Since the German journals were known to every research chemist, Mendeleev s Periodic Table became widely known almost at once. Although details of the tables were subject to argument, and many newly discovered elements were later added, the basic principle of organization behind the table was quickly accepted. [Pg.776]

Mendeleev, D. I. (1869a). On the relationship of the properties of the elements to their atomic weights (firstly appeared in Russian). Journal of the Russian Chemical Society 1,60-77 then published as a short abstract in Zeitschrift fur Chemie 12,405 06 [translated from German by Carmen Giunta and published by David, M. Knight, ed., In Classical Scientific Papers-Chemistry, Second Series, (New Yoik American Elsevier, 1970)]. [Pg.61]

The history of the article on which this part of the report is based is rather remarkable. In 1994, the Journal of Russian Chemical Society, No. 2, was fully devoted to CW, and this paper was to be published in it, too. Yet, the paper ran so contrary to the opinion of the military authors on the danger of seal failure in sunken CW that the article was withdrawn, because this issue was financed by the military. The editorial board had to publish this paper in its next "civil issue of the Journal. [Pg.162]

These professors apparently wanted the Russian Chemical Society to be created, but once it was established, they did not feel it necessary to maintain their membership. What this implies is that the society was seen as a specialized scientific society for chemists, not a broader scientific society that would encompass various academic disdpfines. [Pg.289]
