Davis (1943), 60 (Ruggieri s Russian Fire -see under Copper Acetate) 70 (Lilac light Bengal fire Basic Cu sulfate 6, K chlorate 26,... [Pg.310]

Ruggieri s Russian fire, as his son later described it, consisted of crystallized copper acetate 4 parts, copper sulfate 2 parts, and ammonium chloride 1 part,13 all finely pulverized and mixed with alcohol, and placed upon cotton wick attached to spikes upon the thin metal pieces which were the leaves of the palm tree. The resulting display would not be impressive according to modern standards. [Pg.60]

K bromate 0,7, K (or Na) chlorate 0.5 to l.O sulfur (or charcoal) 0.5 to 0.8 part. Deflagration of this compn produced abundant violet-grey smoke-Cupric Acetate, Cu(CgH302)2 H O grn-blue pdr decompg beginning at 240° can be prepd by the action of AcOH on CuO or by other methods (Ref. 2). The cupric salt can serve as a basic material in the prepn of Cu(II) aceto-arsenite, an ingredient of some pyrotechnic compns. The so-called Ruggieri s Russian Fire compn contained Cu acetate 4, Cu sulfate 2 ... [Pg.298]

Mayevskii, N.V. (1823—1892), eminent Russian ballistician and originator of the science of Exterior Ballistics. He was equally known for work in the field of Interior Ballistics. In 1856 he designed a method of measuring the pressures in various sections of a gun barrel on firing. In 1867 he conducted expts to detn projectile velocity and correlated press with velocity Refs 1) Hayes, Elements of Ordnance , J. Wiley, NY, 437 (1938) 2) A.D. Blinov, Kurs-... [Pg.65]

Lapsang Souchong tea is a Chinese black tea flavored during firing by the use of smoky woods such as pine. These smoky teas are commonly added to blends of other black teas to create Russian Caravan blends. [Pg.72]

What is the world made of The ancient Greeks speculated about earth, air, fire, and water today we turn to the periodic table for more reliable information. The story of how we got from there to here is full of fascinating people, and in this elegant, entertaining book, Paul Strathern introduces us to ancient philosophers, medieval alchemists, and the earliest chemists—and to dimitri Mendeleyev, the card-playing nineteenth-century Russian who claimed that the answers came to him in a dream"... [Pg.566]

Baratov, A. N. et al., p.24 of BLL translation (628.74, issued 1966) of Russian book on Fire Prevention and Firefighting Symposium . The addition of bromomethane to ethylene oxide (used for germicidal sterilising) to reduce the risk of explosion is relatively ineffective, the inhibiting concentration being 31.2, as against 5.8 for hexane and 13.5 vol.% for hydrogen. [Pg.314]

Nearly everybody agreed on that. I told Sprecher to cheer up. If the judges felt this way about the almost-certain fall of Czechoslovakia, how could they rule otherwise in the Farben case The Soviet conquest of Czechoslovakia "from the inside" demonstrated, it seemed to me, the very essence of our theory. So far as we know, not one Russian soldier had set foot in Prague but the fact that the Russian Army would not actually cross the borders and would merely stand by—clearly ready to do so at any minute— was hardly a justification for the conquest. A robber who holds up a bank and gets away with his loot without firing a shot would find... [Pg.124]

The East Roman (Byzantine) Navy poured from the tube or syphon located at the boat s stern a liquid ( sea fire ) made from naphtha, quicklime and sulfur, over the Russian ships attacking Constantinople (Ref 66, p 14)... [Pg.117]

Russian fleet was defeated at the siege of Constantinople by means of Greek Fire (Ref 11, p 12)... [Pg.118]

When Chingis (Chenghiz) Khan and his Mongolian troops invaded Europe and Russia, they threw stones by crossbow ballistas to break fortification walls also used poisonous powder flasks (Du huo fou), fire arrows (Huo jian) and fire stone balls (Hua pao). Such weapons were used at the battle at Amu Dariya river against Khorasan Empire (present Russian... [Pg.118]

A much more effective mixture was the one invented in 668 AD by Kallinikos and called Greek Fire (see below) or Sea Fire. The exact formula of the original composition is not known because the Greeks kept it a secret. However, it seems that it contained, besides the combustible materials such as naphtha, pitch and sulfur, some oxidizer, which could have been saltpeter. This mixture was liquid that was discharged against the enemy either from pots, tubes or siphons, installed in the bows of ships. The moment the liquid came in contact with the water it was ignited. This device was so effective that it caused several defeats of the Arabic fleets in the 7th and 8th centuries, of the Russian fleet in 941 and 1043 and saved Constantinople several times from invaders. Greek... [Pg.330]

ROCKET (or Roketto) (Funshindan) or Rocket Ammunition Raketto Danyaku) can be defined as any self-propelled, unguided missile which is fired from a device called a launcher, as was Ger Faustpatrone, Russian Katiusha or Amer Bazooka. Japanese launchers are briefly described here under ROCKET LAUNCHERS. Each Rocket Missile carried its own propeller... [Pg.495]

He was a member of the Russian Academy of Science and one of the first to study, theoretically, the processes taking place in the gun barrel during firing... [Pg.215]

Imperial Russian 7.62mm expl round for rifles and machine guns had a cupronickel jacketed bullet with flat nose. It contd the expl, detonator and firing pin (Fig 14 of Ref)... [Pg.270]

Natural gas has been known for many centuries. For instance, near Baku, Caucasus, a temple of a religious sect who "worshipped the fire , existed long before the Russians arrived there. The fire was produced by the burning of natural gas. The first commercial use of the gas in the USA was in 1820 at Fredonia, NY, when a few buildings were... [Pg.669]

Here is the point the SSRIs may well make us feel peppier in the daytime, but the cost is a blight on our sleep architecture that rivals the Russian bombardment of Grozny in Chechnya. True, the drugs don t kill innocent women and children, but they wreak such havoc with the eye movement control systems of the brain stem as to break down the walls between REM and NREM sleep. Like bombardment, the higher the dose fired on the brain, the greater the destruction of sleep architecture, until finally all of the walls come down ... [Pg.226]
