Rubus berries

Fiber. Diets rich in dietary fiber, especially prebiotic fiber, have broad physiological benefits, including decreased blood levels of cholesterol and lowered risk of several types of cancer and coronary artery disease. The top superfruit sources of fiber are mangoes, figs, oranges, strawberries, the Rubus berries (raspberries, blackberries, boysenberries), goji berries (wolfberries), kiwifruits, dates, a ai berries (as a puree or pulp), seaberries, and dried plums (prunes). [Pg.29]

Closely related to its superfruit cousins, the blackberry and black raspberry, red raspberry is a Rubus member of the rose family, Rosaceae. This group of fruits is characterized by its many individual drupelets, each like a small berry with one seed. The dozens of individual drupelets in one Rubus berry contribute extra skin, seeds, and pectin, which result in high dietary fiber and micronutrient value. This design places the red raspberry among the highest fiber-content plant foods known. The red raspberry is approximately 20 percent fiber by total weight ... [Pg.82]

I relish red raspberries and blackberries they are high on the list because their delicate texture, beautiful color, exceptional prebiotic fiber content, and slight sourness can really set a fruit salad apart with distinct freshness. Some people may be dissuaded by the crunch of seeds from these two Rubus berries, but the seeds impart a little tartness and are loaded with micronutrients, so you know you re getting extra nutrition from them. [Pg.136]

ETs are known to be abundant in berry fruits. Among them, Rubus berries (raspberries, blackberries and cloudberries) and strawberries are those with higher content in these HTs. Sanguiin H-6 is the main ET in raspberry and strawberryIn addition, free EA, as well as different glycosidic derivatives, can be found in their jams. On the other hand, berries are the major contributors to the ET intake in westernized countries. In this sense, strawberries account for the majority (68%) of the total intake of EA derivatives by American adults. ... [Pg.88]

Ellagic acid has been reported to be present in berries, particularly raspberries (Rubus idaeus), strawberries, and blackberries [Amakura et al., 2000]. However, free ellagic acid is normally present in low levels in berries that more commonly contain ellagitannins, such as sanguiin H-6 and lambertianin C, which release ellagic and gallic acid when treated with acid (Fig. 1.26) [Mullen et al., 2002],... [Pg.22]

Raspberry (Rubus idaeus L.) honey is white, with a very pleasant aroma and delicious flavor. Raspberry comb honey is so tasty that it seems to melt in the mouth. This honey comes from the blossoms of the raspberry, which grows in woods and orchards throughout the territories of the former U.S.S.R. It is particularly plentiful in forests of Siberia, the Urals, and Kirov, Gorky, and other regions, and holds a place of importance among fruit and berry plants. [Pg.402]

The blackberry is a member of the Rubus family of berries, which also includes red and black raspberries. It is one of natures more interesting fruits and is actually not a berry but rather an aggregate fruit comprising many small fruits in lobules called drupelets, each containing a seed enriched with nutrients and omega-3 fats (about 20 percent of seed fat content). [Pg.92]
