Anhydride-cured epoxies require a high temperature cure. Before applying epoxy, parts should be predried for 2 to 3 h at 120° C (250° F) in an air-circulating oven to drive out residual moisture. The form of Ti02 most commonly used as a nanofiller is titanium dioxide P25 from Evonik Industries [27] (Fig. 7). Ti02 is an excellent additive to improve the heat stability of room temperature vulcanized (RTV) silicone adhesive/sealant [13]. Hydrophilic fumed Ti02 (AEROXIDE Ti02 P25) from Evonik Industries can be applied also as a catalyst carrier or active component for photocatalyst reactions, where the crystalline structure and phase (anatase and rutile) content are important. RTV silicone adhesive is a rubberlike polymer called polydimethsiloxane. RTV stands for room temperature vulcanizing, or simply a rubber that cures at room temperature. Silicone rubber adhesives are made using a complicated process that turns elemental silicon metal made from sand (silica) into a rubbery polymer. When cured, silicone rubber adhesives/sealants have excellent resistance to heat (500—600 °F) and moisture that makes them exceptionally suited for outdoor weathering applications such as sealant and caulking compounds in the construction industry. Because of its exceptional properties, silicone adhesive has been used in some exotic applications such as the soles of the boots worn by the first astronauts to walk on the moon. Silicone adhesive/sealants are used to seal windows, doors, and portholes on the space shuttle and many satellite missiles. Like the 1-RTV systems, the two-part room temperature vulcanization systems (2-RTV) cure to produce flexible elastomers that resist humidity and other harsh environments. Even silicone-based materials cannot fulfill all requirements in diverse applications. One property of silicone materials is their high gas and moisture permeability, which is disadvantageous in, e.g., edge sealing of insulation gls s, where a barrier for water and gas has to be provided. Hydrocarbon polymer-based materials like poly-isobutene possess these desirable properties. However, they lack the ready curability and adhesion of RTV silicone materials.
