Andre-Marie Ampere was born m Lyons, France, the son of a wealthy merchant. Ampere s education was determined by his father, Jean-Jacques, who followed Jean Jacques Rousseau s theories of education. Ampere was left to educate himself, as his inclinations dictated, among the books of his father s extensive library. At an early age Ampere discovered a talent for mathematics, working out the early books of Euclid by himself. On finding that some of the books he wished to consult in the librai y in Lyons were in Latin, he taught himself the language. Ampere s mother was a devout Catholic, who ensured he was thoroughly instructed in the faith. 

To some extent this concept of a self-regulating nature dovetailed with the idealisation of nature by the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. In Albert Howard s words ...

Jean-Jacques Rousseau believed that fear of death can be diminished by having a positive way of life, accepting pain as inevitable, and not being overwhelmed by thoughts of the inevitability of death.

A Swiss publisher introduced, in June 2012, a new version of Jean-Jacques Rousseau s Complete Works. This new edition had been scientifically directed by two famous scholars in the humanities, and involved 21 Rousseau specialists. Published in paper format, it comprises 24 volumes and more than 15000 pages. 

For instance, Jean Jacques Rousseau contrasted the laboratory research of chemistry or anatomy with research in botany. The former cannot be conducted without instruments, technicians and requires a lot of time and money, whereas the latter may be studied by solitary and lazy practionners.
