Road toll

Thoresen, T., Fry, T., Heiman, L. and Cameron, M., (1992). Linking economic activity, road safety countermeasures and other factors with the Victorian road toll. MU ARC Report No. 29. Victoria. Australia. [Pg.95]

The road toll is not only a human tragedy, but also a substantial burden on the entire economy. The costs of rescue, emergency care, rehabilitation, lifetime care of permanently disabled victims, property damage and the work time lost through the injmy and death of productive members of society are not well researched for Poland, but can be expected to be as high as 2% of GNP [WHO 13],... [Pg.54]

We have written not (so much) for the traffic safety professional but primarily for the intelligent layman— for that surprisingly large proportion of the population who have been touched by the road toll (Figure 1.1), for road crash victim support groups, and for media editors and transport and public health reporters. These are the people who will help to catalyse the creation of a vibrant and vocal constituency for traffic safety. [Pg.3]

It is most telling that the UN declaration involves targets set as reductions in the absolute numbers of both deaths and serious injuries, and that the institutional leadership came from the international health agency arising from its forecast that the road toll will become one of the major burdens of global disease over the next couple of decades. [Pg.32]

Media reporting of road trauma doesn t help matters, as only deaths are routinely reported, and deaths are merely the tip of the iceberg. There are well over 10 serious injuries for every death, and injuries, as we saw in Chapter 2, have impacts weU beyond the injured person. Occasionally we read of the financial burden of the road toll, but this number—currently in the billions of dollars per annum in Australia— does not resonate with the public, as lobby groups and politicians are continuously quoting big numbers for every cause they want to promote, and most folk have little concept of what billions means. [Pg.50]

Mr (X) said the strategy would seek to address the over-representation of country Victorians in the annual road toll figures. Last year 163 people tragically died in road accidents across regional Victoria, an increase of 13 per cent on the previous year, Mr (X) said. [Pg.66]

Road trauma is used to describe the aggregate of serious injuries and deaths from traffic crashes. The common Australian and New Zealand term road toll has been avoided except where part of a direct quote or the title of a cited reference. [Pg.201]

The tank truck was en route to Valencia, but traveled on a back road instead of the highway in order to avoid tolls. It was a hot summer day. As it passed through the village of San Carlos de la Rapita, observers noticed that the tank truck sped up appreciably and was traveling at an excessive speed. [Pg.42]

This chapter has been aimed at the revenue-earning project, the amounts of revenue leading to an annual cash flow, from which profitability, and hence economic feasibility, can be determined. But what if there are no revenues A new public service investment, such as a major (non-toll) road, or an overseas aid project, such as a water pipeline system for a sub-Saharan country, generate no revenues - yet may have huge investment costs. [Pg.299]
