Materials of Construction. The principal materials of construction are ferrous throughout, but different grades are used for the different components. Casings usually are in cast iron or cast steel, and impellers may be in the same materials or in fabricated steel. Early designs of centrifugal compressors used riveted assembly for impellers castings or welded construetions are preferred today. Shafts usually are of carbon steel with hardened or stainless steel sleeves at points where erosion is likely. The selection of materials for smaller components that may be subject to friction is particularly important because of the danger of comlnistion. [Pg.814]

Unlike certain alloys such as stainless steel, aluminium exhibits a rather low susceptibility to crevice corrosion. Local repair of delamination originally caused by non-durable surface treatment is only temporarily successful at best. The surface treatment on the unrepaired portion of the assembly remains susceptible to attack and the area of delamination will likely continue to grow once the assembly is put back into service and exposed to moist conditions. Replacement or complete remanufacture of the component is the only way to permanently address this type of damage. However, time-limited repairs using bonded or mechanical methods can be used to extend the life of the component until a major overhaul is scheduled. The impellers can be an open-faced (stationary shroud) or closed-face (rotating shroud) design. As long as the tip velocities are below 1000 ft/s, closed-face impellers can be used. The standards allow the impellers to be welded, riveted, milled, or cast. Riveted impellers are unacceptable, especially if the impeller loading is high. Impellers are to be assembled on the shaft with a shrink fit with or without key. Shrink fits should be carefully done because excessive shrink fits can cause a problem known as hysteresis whirl. The boilers in those days were not pressure vessels. They were constructed from sheets of wrought iron and assembled by riveting and hammering the seams. A new approach was proposed for making effective helmets which could replace the former British army steel helmet. Essentially the new helmet used modified phenolic resins reinforced with nylon, and the crown cap inside was thermoformed from polyethylene. Formerly the crown cap was attached to the steel by rivets—not an appropriate method for fixing polyethylene to reinforced plastics. Instead a method was developed with a hot-melt adhesive based on ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers cast as film on release paper. For assembly, the cast film is cut in advance to match the intricate shape required and activated by heat to bond under light pressure subsequently, a further heat activation is employed to fix the crown cap in place (Figure 52 illustrates this). [Pg.111]

The most advanced machine vision systems typically involve acquisition and interpretation of three-dimensional information. These systems often require more sophisticated illumination and processing techniques than one- and two-dimensional systems, but their results can be riveting. These scanners can characterize an object s shape three-dimensionally to tolerances of far less than a millimeter.
