A personal note

The recommendations described in this Chapter go further than some companies consider necessary. For example, companies may put Do Not Operate notices on valves instead of locks, or to save time, they may turn a blind eye to occasional shortcuts. Nevertheless, bitter experience has convinced me that the reconamendations are necessary. 

In 1968, after 16 of years experience in production, 1 was transferred to a new position in safety. It was an unusual move at the time for someone with my background, but five deaths from three serious fires in three years, two of them the results of poor preparation for maintenance, convinced the senior management that more resources should be devoted to safety and that it could no longer be left to nontechnical people and elderly foremen. Since then I have read scores of reports about other accidents that happened because of this cause. Some were serious others were near-misses. 

When I retired from industry one of my first tasks was to sort the many accident reports I had collected. The thickest folder by far was one labeled Preparation For Maintenance. Some of the incidents from that folder, together with more recent ones, are described above. 

If you decide my recommendations are not right for your organization, please do not ignore the accidents I have described. Check that your procedures will prevent them, or they will happen again.

Finally, on a personal note, the editors as individual would like to acknowledge the close co-operation we have received from each other. We think that we made a good team, even if we say it ourselves ... 

On a personal note, the mathematical description of this series of neutron captures called the s process was solved by the writer in his Ph.D. thesis, and was published in 1961. This provided me the opportunity to assist in small ways with the development of programs of the measurement of neutron-capture cross sections for the s process, first at Oak Ridge and later at Karlsruhe. These were great privileges in a fortunate life. 

He is survived by his wife and partner of 55 years Barbara (nee Allen). In conclusion, I feel that as a Johnson graduate student, I am allowed a personal note of farewell to a mentor, a colleague and, most of all, a close and dearly loved friend. Were there a way to have it otherwise we would never have had to part. 

On a personal note, it gives us genuine pleasure to dedicate this sixth edition of our textbook to Professor Harry Gray and to the memory of Professors Bruce Mahan and George Pimentel. We have enjoyed and been inspired by their textbooks, lectures, research papers, and seminars since our student days in the 1970s. Our own education owes much to their pioneering explanations of the role of quantum mechanics in chemical bonding. 

On a personal note, it was most gratifying to see how well the original volume was received. To those of you who read the book, some of whom have thanked me for collating the materials, I owe you a debt of gratitude for applying this knowledge and making it worthwhile. I hope you find this new edition as useful and informative. 

My fellow editors of Advances in Chemical Engineering, the staff at Academic Press, and I thank the authors for taking time out of their busy schedules to contribute to this volume. The effort involved in writing good review articles is a selfless service to the profession and is truly appreciated. A personal note of thanks is also extended to the authors for their patience during the review and production process. 

In its September 22, 1972 issue, Business Week ran a multi-page article on international hydrogen developments.10 (Its effect on the scientists assembled in San Diego was apparendy quite riveting. Marchetti later wrote, in a personal note, that out of 650 participants about 500 were concentrated in the [session] on H2. ) Fortune carried a longer story 2 months later, and that was followed by articles in Readers Digest, Time, Popular Science, and other periodicals. 

A Personal Note. - My interest in the many-body perturbation theory approach to the correlation problem began with some lectures on diagrammatic techniques delivered by P.W. Atkins at the 1972 Oxford Theoretical Chemistry Summer School directed by the late C.A. Coulson. Atkins demonstrated beautifully how diagrammatic techniques could cut through complicated...
