Rifampicin enhances the catabolism of many glucocorticoids. For example, it increases the plasma clearance of prednisolone by 45 % and may reduce the amount of drug available to the tissues by as much as 66% (SEDA-8,288). Glucocorticoid therapy for concomitant diseases should therefore be adjusted in the light of plasma concentrations and clinical effects during rifampicin treatment (SEDA-10,272). For example, rejection of a kidney transplant occurred after 7 weeks of rifampicin therapy (109).

An isolated case report describes a marked reduction in the effects of warfarin, which was attributed to teicoplanin, but which could be equally be explained by rifampicin treatment. One study found that vancomycin possibly causes a small increase in the effects of warfarin, and a cohort study suggested that vancomycin increased risk of over-anticoagulation with acenocoumarol or phenprocoumon.

Additional side effects reported in connection with rifampicin treatment were severe exudative conjunctivitis (Cayley and Majumdar 1976), the occurrence of the Stevens-Johnson syndrome (Nyirenda and Gill 1977) and pemphigus vulgaris (Gange et al. 1976). All information on adverse reactions to rifampicin has been obtained from studies of patients afflicted with tuberculosis. It is likely that similar observations will be made when patients with other diseases are treated with similar doses, but this has yet to be demonstrated.
