Retrieval studies precautions

Abstract The biocompatibihty, biofunctionahty and biostability of a prosthesis, its degradation and the host response are determined throngh an implant retrieval stndy.This chapter focnses on varions aspects of analyzing retrieved biotextile implants. Sample preparation techniques, analytical test methods and different test standards are reviewed. Some precautions and the limitations of implant retrieval studies are also discussed. 

Retrieval programs are expensive and usually long-term studies. Some of the precautions that have to be considered in order to plan and execute a successful retrieval study are described below. 

In subsequent chapters, we provide an overview of SPMD fundamentals and applications (Chapter 2) the theory and modeling which includes the extrapolation of SPMD concentrations to ambient environmental concentrations (Chapter 3) study considerations such as the necessary precautions and procedures during SPMD transport, deployment, and retrieval (Chapter 4) the analytical chemistry and associated quality control for the analysis of SPMD dialysates or extracts (Chapter 5) a survey and brief description of bioassays-biomarkers used to screen the toxicity of SPMD environmental extracts (Chapter 6) discussions on how HOC concentrations in SPMDs may or may not relate to similarly exposed biomonitoring organisms (Chapter 7) and selected examples of environmental studies using SPMDs (Chapter 8). Coiiecting the implant from the site of implantation and its cleaning and preparation for the study are crucial aspects of testing retrieved implants. Procedures and precautions for handling the retrieved implants prior to testing are discussed here.
