Overloading effects seem even more complex at intermediate pH because silan-ols are now partially ionized and involved in the retention of bases. As mentioned previously, the overload of now-ionized silanols could at least be part of the cause of tailing peaks, even when very small amounts of ionized base are used [18,24]. However, it has been observed that as solute mass increases in experiments at pH 7, column efficiency may improve from an initially low value to a maximum, afterward declining in the usual way [33]. This observation could be due to the blocking or saffiration of ionized silanols by a portion of the sample, such that the rest interacts mainly by hydrophobic processes, resulting in better efficiency. Carr and co workers [77] studied the retention of different amines on PBD-Zirconia phases. On PBD zirconia, they found that steric hindrance has a much greater effect on retention of bases in comparison to silica ODS phases thus, quaternary amines have substantially less retention than the corresponding less hydrophobic primary amine. This result agreed with previous findings of Sokolowski and Wahlund [78]. Thus, secondary and tertiary amines such as dimethylbutylamine and TEA were less effective silanol blockers. Only ammonia and primary amines were able to improve the chromatographic properties of basic solutes on PBD-zirconia. It would be interesting to check the application of these results also to silica-ODS phases. [Pg.338]

If the HPLC mobile phase is operated close to the pA of any solute or if an acidic or basic buffer is used in the mobile phase, the effects of temperature on retention can be dramatic and unpredicted. This can often be exploited to achieve dramatic changes in the separation factor for specific solutes. Likewise, the most predictable behavior with temperature occurs when one operates with mobile phase pH values far from the pA s of the analytes [10], Retention of bases sometimes increase as temperature is increased, presumable due to a shift from the protonated to the unprotonated form as the temperature increases. As noted by Tran et al. [26], temperature had the greatest effect on the separation of acidic compounds in low-pH mobile phases and on basic compounds in high-pH mobile phases. McCalley [27] noted anomalous changes in retention for bases due to variations in their pA s with temperature and also noted that lower flow rates were needed for optimal efficiency. [Pg.262]

Considering these reactions, it is apparent that an increase in the mobile phase counter ion concentration (Na+ or SO3 ) will proportionately decrease the retention of the sample ion. The pH of the mobile phase is very important as it can affect the relative ionisation of acids or bases, i.e. a higher pH leads to increased ionisation of acids on anion exchangers while a lower pH favours increased ionisation and retention of bases on cation exchangers. [Pg.219]

Liquid crystal polymers (LCP) are a recent arrival on the plastics materials scene. They have outstanding dimensional stability, high strength, stiffness, toughness and chemical resistance all combined with ease of processing. LCPs are based on thermoplastic aromatic polyesters and they have a highly ordered structure even in the molten state. When these materials are subjected to stress the molecular chains slide over one another but the ordered structure is retained.
