Resorcinol complications

Both the wood-based panel industry and the adhesive industry show a high commitment to and great capability towards innovation. The best evidence for this is the considerable diversity of types of adhesives used for the production of wood-based panels. Well-known basic chemicals have been used for a long time for the production of the adhesives and their resins, the most important ones being formaldehyde, urea, melamine, phenol, resorcinol and isocyanate. The greater portion of the currently used adhesive resins and adhesives for wood-based panels is produced with these few raw materials. The how to cook the resins and the how to formulate the adhesive become more and more complicated and sophisticated and are key factors to meet today s requirements of the wood-based panel industry. [Pg.1039]

The extent of C-alkylation as a side reaction in etherification varies about 1% of allyl 2-allylphenyl ether is formed when phenol is used in the acetone and potassium carbonate method with allyl bromide with cinnamyl bromide or 7,7-dimethylallyl bromide the extent of C-alkylar tion is greater.16 A complicated mixture of C- and O-alkylation products results from the treatment of phenol with 4-bromo-2-hexene and 4-chloro-2-hexene. 9 4-Hexenylresordnol has been obtained in about 40% yield from the reaction of l-bromo-2-hexene, resorcinol, and potassium carbonate in boiling acetone.99 An appreciable amount of C-alkylation occurs when 2,6-dimethyIphenol is treated with allyl bromide and sodium ethoxide in ethanol.70 Since, in general, the ampunt of C-alkylation is greatly increased by carrying out the alkylation on the sodium salt of the phenol in benzene,16 this method is unsuitable for the preparar tion of allyl aryl ethers. [Pg.23]

When we reinvestigated the base-induced reaction of 1-naphthol with formaldehyde we isolated and identified three isomeric tetrameric compounds [2] which we named calix[4]naphthalenes by analogy with the calix[4]arenes and cal-ix[4]resorcinarenes. However, unlike the latter which are derived fromp-substituted phenols and resorcinol respectively, several different isomers can theoretically exist for the calix[4]naphthalenes.
