The organizations encountered when examining the composition of essential oils include the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM), the International Fragrance Association (IFRA), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the Association Francaise de Normalisation (AFNOR) and the British Pharmacopoeia (BP). There is some overlap between recommendations for usage and safety by these bodies. The background and roles of RIFM and IFRA are described in the next chapter in relation to safety.

Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM) testing is generally limited to acute oral and dermal toxicity, irritation and dermal sensitization, and phototoxicity of individual materials, and there is little effort to address synergistic and modifying effects of materials in combination (Johansen et al., 1998). 

The Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM), created in 1966, is an independent entity which evaluates and distributes scientific data on the safety assessment of fragrance substances found in cosmetics and other products. RIFM maintains the largest database on toxicology data for flavour and fragrance materials available worldwide, classifying more than 4500 materials.
