Reviews. Since 1917, a review chapter on fibers, textiles, and cellulose has been included by the Society of Chemical Industry in its annual Reports on the Progress of Applied Chemistry (81). 

There was a time when annual reviews were published on the progress of sugar production. One of the best known publications was Stammers Jahresbericht fiir die Zuckerindustrie (5). This has been discontinued. The Reports on the Progress of Applied Chemistry (4), published by the British Society of Chemical Industry, is one of the best publications for a historical and systematic survey. An annual technical review is also published in the Sugar Reference Book (7), giving a summary of some of the important developments, but this review is far from complete, and it must often be judged as lacking in a critical attitude of the reviewer.

Review publications give considerable attention to the desired products. Reports on the Progress of Applied Chemistry, is published annually by the Society of Chemical Industry, London (91, Two sections of Reviews of Petroleum Technology (95, are of special interest—the section on derived chemicals and the section on petroleum literature. The latter section is concerned primarily with the nonperiodical literature, such as books and pamphlets. The publications of the Society of Chemical Industry are as follows Chemistry and Industry, the Journal of Applied Chemistry, the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture and the Annual Reports on the Progress of Applied Chemistry. In addition monographs are published on special subjects. 

As an acknowledged authority on carbohydrate chemistry over several decades, Gerald accepted the responsibility to review areas of his expertise, and he wrote extensively for Advances in Carbohydrate Chemistry and Biochemistry, Annual Reports on the Progress of Chemistry, Annual Review of Biochemistry, Pure and Applied Chemistry and several other reviewing journals and symposia proceedings. He served for more than 30 years on the Editorial Board of Carbohydrate Research since its inception in 1965, and his multi-author, three volume text The Polysaccharides, completed in 1985 for Academic Press, remains a benchmark publication in the field. 

The field of general chemistry includes publications of most of the world s chemical societies. These journals deal with all aspects of chemistry, reporting original work of research, and carry important book reviews. Annales de Chimie (Paris, 1789-) is a very important French journal which publishes a large number of university dissertations, general articles, reviews, papers on technical aspects of applied chemistry, abstracts, book reviews and news of French and other scientific conferences. The scope of this article is to account for some aspects regarding the possibility of overcoming steric hindrances in chemical reactivity. This is one of the main themes of research in all fields of chemistry we will present here a progress report on our understanding of elementary ehemieal proeesses and especially some recent achievements in experimental teehniques for eontrolling the spatial orientation of moleeules. For the time being, these achievements represent tools for investigations of the basie mechanisms, but perspectives are open to also exploit them for applied purposes. 

Chapters 3 to 11 of the report then take up particular areas of fundamental or applied chemistry and chemical engineering. Each chapter starts with a specific list of some important challenges for the future. Then the chapter has a section on goals of the field, a section on progress to date to meet those goals, a section on challenges and opportunities for the future, and finally a section on why this is important.
