Therefore, once the demonstration plant described in this volume is built and we have proved that renewable energy power plants do not cost more than fossil or nuclear ones, from that point on, all new power plants should be renewable. This book also emphasizes that the transition can be speeded by energy conservation. While the ultimate solution is a solar-hydrogen economy, the immediate tasks include the use of the existing technologies serving energy conservation. 

Our renewable energy power supply was two ESPMs that output about four volts at 20 amps (open circuit voltage, short circuit current). 

An important design consideration was to maximize the efficient use of energy input from renewable energy power sources. Most commercial electrolyzers are designed to run off utility power grids with a rectified DC source. The electrode materials used in these electrolyzers reflect that particular type and quality of power source. 

Electrolyzer designs historically have emerged from particular industries. Their design parameters and requirements are quite different than what is needed to produce hydrogen from renewable energy sources. That said, there is a lot that can be learned from electrolyzer development over the years, but there is plenty of room for electrolyzer innovation, especially for those designed to operate with renewable energy power sources.
