In process engineering, we need to be much more precise. What do we mean by green chemistry, green plastics, or green fuels In this chapter, we present a scientifically based method to make a proper assessment to what extent a process is "green," that is, sustainable and efficient. Some examples will be given for illustration.

Robert H. Perry and Don W. Green Perry s Chemical Engineering Handbook, 7 edition, McGraw-Hill 1997. This is the starting point for all process engineers, also those dealing with products. The 2500 pages of fine print may put you off. However, you do not have to read them in one go, and there is a searchable electronic version. 

Research, and is the editor-in-chief for two international research jonrnals International Journal of Process Wastes Treatment and International Journal of Wastewater Treatment and Green Chemistry. He worked as a consnltant chemical process engineer for China International Water Electric Corp. (CWE, Manritins) from February 2006 to March 2008. Ackmez is presently a lectnrer in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at the University of Manritins. 

Selecting materials of construction is an irrqjortant aspect of designing flow systems. The process engineer, more than any other engineer, must handle corrosive as well as dangerous fluids. We will not discuss corrosion here. The interested reader can refer to Fontana and Greene [4] for further details. 

The US trade names and codes are given by Perry and Green (1984). A comprehensive review of the engineering materials used for chemical and process plant can be found in the books by Evans (1974), Hepner (1962) and Rumford (1954). Hepner s book is a collection of articles previously published in the journal Chemical and Process Engineering, in the period 1960 to 1961. The articles cover the complete range of materials used for process plant.
