The cardinal feature of catalysis is that the equilibrium constant of a chemical reaction is unaffected by the presence of a catalyst. This is true as long as the concentration of the catalyst is insignificant relative to the concentra-tion(s) of the least abundant reactant(s) or product(s). Thus for an uncatalyzed reaction (A B) with rate constants k+ and k- (for the forward and reverse rates, respectively), the equilibrium constant K q = k+lk-. In the presence of catalyst, the rate constants are increased, say to xk+ and yk-, and the new equilibrium constant Keq = xk+lyk- = (xly) k+/k-) = x y)K q. Because the rate enhancement in the presence of enzyme will always be the same for forward and reverse reactions, x = y, such that Ksq must still equal K q.

Protein degradation and amino acid metabolism are highly elevated in the diabetic, because the stimulatory effect of insulin on protein synthesis is nonexistent and the relative excess of glucagon and glucocorticoids causes protein breakdown to continue. Indeed, muscle wasting is a cardinal symptom of the untreated diabetic. Insulin also inhibits amino add release into the bloodstream, and this may be a reason a moderate rise in plasma amino add levels is observed in the diabetic. Such increased amino adds are largely of the branched-chain type, and alanine levels are in fact lower than normal. Nevertheless, alanine uptake by the liver is twice that of the normal individual, and it continues to be a major actor in the gluconeogenesis process. 

In principle it might be a Pavlovian habit related to the establishement of a direct association between a Pavlovian CS and an UR (see Cardinal et ah, 2004). Another possibility is that automatic responding is an instrumental habit related to learning of an instrumental stimulus-response (S-R) association. An instrumental habit is more likely to account for the relative flexibility of the behavior as indicated by the ability to rapidly switch to an explicit goal-oriented mode when the automatic responding is impaired.

The cardinal rules for proper use of wood can be stated simply keep wood dry, and, if you can t keep it dry, use naturally durable or preservative-treated wood. The first rule is based on a simple biological principle liquid water is needed in wood cells to provide a medium for diffusion of the enzymes or other metabolites by which wood-decomposing organisms digest the wood substance. If there is no liquid water present inside the wood cells, there will be no medium for diffusion, and therefore no biological decomposition except for certain insects of relatively minor importance. Thus, as long as wood is kept below its fiber-saturation point (about 27% of its dry weight), it will never decay.

More than 5 million (estimated range 4 to 7 million) adults age 40 years or more have PAD and 95% of individuals with PAD have at least one cardiovascular risk factor the majority of patients have multiple risk factors for CVD. Based on the PAD Awareness, Risk, and Treatment New Resources for Survival (PARTNERS) program, the prevalence of PAD in primary care practices is high, yet physician awareness of the PAD diagnosis is relatively low.
