Regional cerebral blood flow

Brain imaging technique that allows visualization of the brain, in order to understand which brain regions are involved in specific functions. Its functioning is based on the measurement of the regional cerebral blood flow which increases when a specific brain region is activated. Its use is similar to that of positron emission tomography (PET). [Pg.511]

One of the most prominent positive symptoms in schizophrenia is the auditory hallucinations that are perceived as distinct voices emanating from outside the individual. Regional cerebral-blood-flow studies in patients experiencing auditory hallucinations reveal activation of the associational auditory cortex during the episodes of hallucinations, but not in their absence. One theory holds that auditory hallucinations occur as a consequence of the inability of individuals with schizophrenia to monitor effectively their inner speech. fMRI studies suggest that... [Pg.879]

Measurements of regional cerebral blood flow by PET and of cerebral perfusion by SPECT often detect functional abnormalities before CT or MRI identifies morphological abnormalities 945 The PET method is a valuable tool for the estimation of regional glucose and oxygen metabolic rates and cerebral blood flow 946 PET and SPECT combined with principles of receptor binding permit imaging of receptors in the intact brain 946... [Pg.939]

Oxy- and deoxy-hemoglobins are mainly of interest because they are related to the regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF). The focal change in rCBF determines the activation state. The term activation usually refers to the focal increase in rCBF whereas a decrease is called deactivation [78]. With the dual wavelength approach, one can derive two simultaneous equations to be solved for each of the two chromophore concentration changes. To this end, Equation (4) is split into two parts, separating the contributions from HbO and Hb. Equation (4) is then, rewritten as... [Pg.348]
