Regent

General synthetic methods were developed after 1920 and extended to many new systems. Oxidative syntheses of dyes are primarily of historical interest (1), whereas nonoxidative syntheses are the most versatile and employ varied combinations of nucleophilic and electrophilic regents. One review Hsts references for the synthesis of dyes prepared before 1959 (12), and another review provides supplemental references to more recent compounds (13). Many nucleophilic and electrophilic reagents used to synthesize cyanine and related dyes are tabulated in Reference 16.

Excess of the reagent hydrolyses to a non-fluorescent residue and the reagent itself does not fluoresce. The optimum wavelength of the excitation light is 390 nm and that of the emitted light 475 nm. This regent is, however, less sensitive than Fluoropa and the derivative is unstable consequently, it must be injected onto the column immediately after formation if used in pre-column derivatization. It has been used successfully in the separation and analysis of polyamines (32), catecholamines (33) and amino acids (34).

As the name suggests, these reactions involve addition of a regent to an unsaturated group and as such nominally display 100% atom economy.

Wheat straw was obtained from Silsoe Research Institute (Silsoe, Bedfordshire, UK), and was dried in a cabinet oven with air circulation at bO C for 16 h. The dried wheat straw was then ground using a Christie Laboratory mill to pass a 60-mesh size screen and stored at 5°C until use. All chemicals were of analytical or regent grade. All experiments were performed in duplicate and yield is given on a dry wheat straw weight basis.

Although the new Duke of Orleans was the wealthiest man in Europe, he was wildly popular with the French public. The house of Orleans had been the liberal voice of France for 150 years. Cousins of the French kings, the dukes opposed the monarchy s absolute power and the Catholic Church s monopoly on education and supported the aspirations of the growing middle class. Radicals talked of making the new duke regent or even king.
